Thoughts on an alternate formation for the USMNT

CM is clearly our deepest position. Bradley, Jones, Cameron, Holden, Mix... Why not adjust the formula to get our top three ball winners on the field.
Dempsey-------Altidore--------Donovan
-----------------Bradley-------------------
--------------Jones--Cameron-------------
Johnson---Besler--Gonzo--------Chandler
---------------Howard----------------
Bradley and Jones can play as the two 'box to box' midfielders required to run this formation. Cameron would strictly provide defensive cover.
Just a thought, and it's already fairly similiar to what Jurgen has in place. I'm sure it's already been discussed at some point.

I really like that but would rather not have both Jones and Cameron in at the same time as starters.

We could do lots of midfield combos with three in the center. We could do the destroyer-creator-runner combo, among many others.
I personally like the double pivot, but I'm not opposed to the 433. One problem is that it would probably leave our left flank exposed as Dempsey probably won't run the extra 40 yards to help provide the LB with cover. That's why I like the 4231, as it gives us attacking width and defensive protection.

Why? I'm not saying that you're guilty of this, but the thought that Jones is purely a defensive midfielder is the biggest misnomer OTB.

True but he certainly doesn't approach what Holden (or Bradley) could provide as a DLP. Not sure if crazy wants to chime in on that. Having Jones and Cameron would be something we do later in the game with the lead IMO.

Jones is the most attacking oriented center mid out of Bradley, Cameron, or Holden. He's a converted striker. It's exactly why, more often than not, he goes forward and Bradley stays back when they're paired together.

We all know he THINKS he's better than them, but I don't know that he has shown that for the USMNT.

Even though it is out of style these days, if they had better defenders I almost think a 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1 could work. Jozy up top with Donovan/Dempsey switching off between second forward and attacking mid. Both get a good bit of freedom to work in. Bradley and Jones/Cameron in CM and you can put FJ and Zusi (or Beasley/Dolo/TC) on the wings to run all day.
The lack of credible back 3 options and international teams with a 2 striker system would be a bit problematic.

What? A three man back line was developed specifically to deal with two striker systems. There was a time when a three man back line was common, especially internationally. With three men in the back, you had a spare man which negated the influence of two strikers. When teams started playing with a lone striker, three man back lines fell into disuse because having two spare men in the back is pointless, and creates problems in other areas of the pitch.

My apologies. The last team to do a three man system really well was Bielsa's Chile. They could switch from a three man line to a four man line fairly seamlessly in game if it called for it.

I should have worded it more clearly. It's all good. 
I'm interested in, but still very much learning, tactics, so I am grateful for any analysis or insight.
That was a fun team to watch. Certainly don't think our players or our coaches can pull something off like that at the moment.
Bielsa is such a fascinating guy. Any word on where he will end up?

He was linked with the Roma job, but other than that I haven't heard too much about him this summer.
