Was this Dempsey's worst performance for the US? It might have been IMO.

He was clearly exhausted. For whatever reason, he wasn't very good at all.

Stats confirm FOBUDan's thoughts on Edu:

LINK

Maurice Edu:

13 passes completed (86%)
2 unsuccessful passes
1 tackled/possession lost
1 Foul earned
0 Fouls conceded

Compare that to Jermaine Jones (who had a much better performance tonight than he did last match):

59 passes completed (87%)
9 unsuccessful passes
16 tackled/possession lost
4 fouls earned
4 fouls conceded

Yep, he should have come off after an hour. Really don't get the Jozy sub.

I think pairing up Edu and Jones is the real problem. It should be one or the other, because both of them try to do unnatural things when they share the field.

That's a good point. I don't think Edu is as bad as most posters here even though tonight he had a couple of bad giveaways..

In looking at the thread, it does seem that he got blamed for at least one horrible Altidore pass (who I thought played worse than Edu tonight).

I think Edu and Jones can both be effective when they have better passers surrounding them, but together I'd almost rather they boot the ball forward than to try to play touch passes through tight pressing.

Thoughts:

Danny Williams is much, much better in the central midfield than he is anywhere else. He might be the best guy to pair with MB if Holden never gets back.

Geoff Cameron looks like a starting CB for now and the future.

Torres will have a role with this team. His skillset is too unique to not be in there. I don't like him on the left as much because it kills our width, but if Fabian Johnson can provide the width then it might work.

Graham Zusi is better than I thought he was. But we still need Donovan.

frick yeah, big win.

Stats can be deceiving. His passes never lead anyone and the two he missed were to wide open receiving players in a midfield with miles of space and time to make decisions.

Stats don't tell the story in this case.

I was wondering what the stats would be because besides his first pass, he really didn't do much wrong IMO other than he didn't play a perfect pass to Williams at the very end.

Everyone jumps all over Jozy Altidore (well mainly just dull Bhoy), but he's a completely different player than Herculez Gomez.

Jozy was phenomenal under Bradley, because he could latch onto long balls, hold possession, and distribute (i.e a classic center forward who needs service from his midfield). Klinsmann prefers the more fluid Gomez, who drifts into space, makes intelligent off-the-ball runs, and doesn't require great service.

Altidore is not a great super-sub option because he needs time to feel out a game, and get his touches. He was invisible against Jamaica on Friday, because he couldn't get any service from our horrible midfield that night.

Yeah, that seems to be our problem. Would definitely like to see Williams and Bradley working together in CM. Torres is an enigma to me. He's not good enough for us to put him in a central position, but he struggles some on the left. He's never played a great game for us, but he always does one or two things that make you think "he can build on that!" Seems like every match he starts is his shot to impress but he never really does.

Im trying really hard not to be an a-hole here, but seriously other than the first pass to Gomez in the away game all of his passes are horrible, they either put the receiver in a bad position, don't lead them, or straight up end at the oppositions feet.

I was really happy to see Danny Williams at defensive mid. That performance should earn him more starts

Yeah, he was solid tonight. Probably that he's slightly more capable of playing farther forward than some other mids we have has worked to his disadvantage. Still want to see how well he reads attacks when we play someone who actually does.

Yeah, the difference that I saw between he and Edu is that Williams isn't a complete liability coming forward. He had that pretty nice shot hit the post in the first half and he seemed to make the right pass. He also allowed Jones, who I thought was much better tonight, to push farther up the field.

Zusi was better than I thought he'd be. Looks like a solid rotational player.

How awesome would it be if Holden was ever healthy?

I really can't take anything you say seriously after you didn't know who #1 was on our team.

He was really good going forward out of the defensive mid. A lot more dangerous in picking passes than when he's played farther forward. Certainly better than Edu. If he defends at least as well as Edu he should be a great addition for us.

I expected that Williams would be good at his actual position so agree that Zusi was the nice surprise as I was nervous about him when I saw the lineup.

Williams hasn't been started for Hoffenheim this season yet (at least I don't think). Then every one said he looked like garbage on Friday so I didn't know if he was going through a rough spell.

I was excited when he picked the U.S. because I think he can be a less crazy version of Jermaine Jones. Strong tackler and a pretty good passer. I would like to see he and MB play together.

It seems like Jurgen listened to some advice or something for his game because going from his midfield on Friday to today's lineup was a drastic change. Overall, I was pleased. I just wish some more of our shots would have hit the back of the net but Jamaica's goalie was out of his mind for 99% of the game.

Zusi is Sporting KC's playmaker. He's excellent at crossing, setting up Kamara/Sapong and co., and hits a fantastic free kick.

His penalties....

not so much.
