How hard is it?
I live in a pretty big city with a professional soccer team (not MLS) and I was stunned to find out that we do not have an AO chapter.

i guess i should speak to it
its not too difficult. contact AO to see if anyone has already started the process, if not tell them you will start it
hit up facebook, the local soccer leagues, soccer bars and spread the word.
contact what you consider to be the soccer bar and ask them to be your "home bar"
the professional club probbaly has a supporters club, get with those guys, there will be a ton of overlap
you need 25 members to become official

I'm sure someone here has tried. Appreciate the info.
How has your experience been so far? And how much time do you normally spend a month on AO?

its been a lot of work, but a lot of fun
i had some cost outlays- bought a couple of banners, and had our own t shirts made up- i paid in advance, probably should have done pre-orders
i try to get FYI emails out about once a week. have our own website, facebook and twitter
once you get official, get business cards (i used vista print) they are cheap and effective
we are really close to 100 official members, so ive gotten to meet a lot of great people
when it times like the gold cup- its a lot of time commitment with games every 3-4 days. introduce yourself to other soccer fans at the bars, tell them about it, hand out cards.
we just had our first scarf issue- I didnt think we'd sell 25, we eneded up selling 100, and im sold out, taking orders for another production run.

Got it. I'll shoot AO an email and go from there. Appreciate the help.

Why is there so much work involved? Isn't it just getting people together to watch the games?

That's what I thought. It's tough because people complain about bars, bars promise one thing and don't deliver, not everyone can make it for a game. All kinds of crap goes wrong.

I need a damn hoops jersey and an AO membership.

a lot of the work is promotion and recruiting
but theres also emails, fb posts and tweets to respond to, membership questions that come up
also things like maintaining your roster database, merchandise orders, partnerships with other businesses...
