I know what happened. It wasn't because of standing areas. LFC and Juve fans were straight up fighting each other. I dont think seats would've made a difference. LFC were pissed at Italians after their previous visit to Rome. Not to mention the stadium was a shithole.

I don't think they would ever consider allowing terraces in EPL stadiums again if they were not very confident that they would be safe. If they were to allow the terraces again and there was another disaster the backlash would be huge, surely they have that in mind.

I thought the Heysel thing was because a wall between fans got knocked down, and that was the main cause, rather than the fighting that ensued.

I'm tentatively in favour of standing. I'm too young to have been to a big club in the days of standing, but I am old enough to have been to gigs and music festivals that were over sold and over crowded. I've been in crowds that were so tight you couldn't turn back. That's not safe. But I think a less packed standing space could be. If you had a correct ratio of fans to space, I think it could work.

Won't happen though.

ETA: Just a guess, but I reckon the police would be massively against it. If they even threatened to pull out of policing games, clubs would lose their liability insurance and I think this means they would lose their safety certificates and be unable to sell tickets. So by that mechanism the police could kill the idea stone dead, if the FA, PL, UEFA and FIFA don't.

The juve fans who were escaping the fighting and the fans who were sitting next to the wall were crushed against and caused it to collapse

they were not sitting. These were terraces.

There are probably ways to safely have terraces in modern stadia compared to the antiquated traps where the tragedies occurred, but it isn't worth pursuing IMO. The EPL grounds haven't lost their electric atmospheres without them and recreating terraces opens the door just enough to allow for the potential of another disaster.

Just wanted to welcome a fellow Villa supporter to the board. Great pic of King Laursen.

That's cool, I knew there were others. I've been saving most of my Villa rants this season for one of their fan forums. Isn't ohiovol a supporter too?

I don't know. Houllier has to be gone right?

I hope so, but I have a feeling he's safe. It's not like Houllier campaigned for the job like Eriksson or Koeman did. Lerner and co. approached him and convinced him to take it, so they probably feel obligated to keep him. His record is horrifying though, no matter how you spin it. There are/were too many good players at the club when he arrived to be a point above relegation.
