I've heard it mentioned several times during the telecast but what is it exactly?

Goals/assist in the international stage (my guess but not sure)

Each time a player plays an international match for their country they get "capped"

Number of games a player has participated in on a team. One game = one cap.

What everyone else said.

Today was Tim Howard's 104th cap, I believe.

Ahhh at first I thought it was like stickers college/pro teams out on helmets but goals/assist/stops made more sense

That would make sense, but I believe the real reason it's called a cap is because back in the day each player would receive a cap if he played because they didn't have jerseys to distinguish the teams. I'm pretty sure it's in the Wikipedia link that someone posted but I didn't click on it.

Wonder if they still give you an actual cap anymore

I know England still gives out ceremonial "caps" to its players. Jack Wilshere posed with all of his in a Twitter picture once.
