So the Cosmos are back and are spending some money

Here is the question, As an American soccer fan, should we hope that the Cosmos start throwing cash around as a catalyst for the MLS raising their cap considerably, or hope that they remain within normal NASL pay ranges and don't blow up the system again?

Not the question, The Cosmos won't be in MLS anytime soon...but if they start throwing money around in the NASL, it could force teams in New York to try to one up them so to speak. An interesting battle for fans could be about to begin.

Maybe in terms of the here & now but as a brand and history it will always be IMO.

I wonder of NYCFC has tried to buy out the Cosmos? Owning that name alone could do a lot for them.

I think MCFC wanted their own brand. It's hard to see an NASL Cosmos team being more relevant than an MLS NYCFC. Cosmos need to get in MLS to matter.
The Cosmos still have brand cred, but if they're playing NASL teams every week I'd guess the shine for this incarnation will wear off quickly.

Garber's comments about the effect that the Cosmos had on the NASL makes it seem like the Cosmos are a super long shot at joining MLS, even in the far future, if they ever get to join at all. Personally, I don't think that they do. Something drastic would have to happen. The way I see it there would have to be two major changes: 1. Garber would have to retire and 2. one of the two current MLS franchises in NY would have to fold.

I don't think they have the money to throw around to compete with MLS. Red Bulls just recently built a $250M world class stadium. NYCFC will build another one. The owners of NYCFC just paid MLS $100M for the franchise.
Cosmos have no big name players and no stadium. Now they are talking about building a stadium but it is a long, long way from talking about building a stadium to actually building a stadium. Moreover, if they do build a stadium, it will be out on Long Island. Red Bulls is across the Hudson and adjacent to NYC and NYCFC will be in the city itself.
Finally, even if Cosmos do throw money around, no one else in NASL will be able to. So I don't see the Cosmos as any particular threat to MLS or the other MLS clubs in any way whatsoever.
I do hope they hang around and as soccer continues to grow and expand I would like to one day see them in MLS. Maybe 15-20 years from now, which if it does ever happen, will be the soonest point in time that it would IMO.

Having Emirates as a kit sponsor is pretty big. The only thing bigger in the MLS is the Red Bulls and the Sounders having Xbox.

I guess I find it interesting because it seems they want to do their own thing and maybe become looked at as a top league. They already have teams in big markets that the MLS isn't in.
