Mexican news outlet Proceso reports that Pulido called the police himself, rather than being found and rescued. How did he call them while being kidnapped? It's simple: He waited until his armed guard wasn't looking, stole his gun, shot him, took his cell phone, escaped through a window he broke himself and called the cops.

That's pretty awesome. That country is so fricked up though. Gotta feel bad for the average Joe stuck in the middle of a cartel war, but if you have any wealth at all then you're a target for kidknappers.

Apparently a lot of rumors are going around that the whole thing was staged by the current government of the state the kidnapping took place in.

The rumor I heard was about the incumbent governor being up for reelection and trying to face critics about the police's response to crimes.

Heard this as well on r/soccer.

Some Mexico residents were commenting about how it sounded farfetched to begin with. Apparently national team players are considered "off limits" and a lot of people didn't believe it from the get go.

However, I'm an American so I have no freaking clue

I saw a blurb from a Spanish-language news agency last night that suggested it was masterminded by the husband of Pulido's cousin. Must admit I didn't read the article to get more but that was the headline.

Cousin in law arrested

quote:

Prosecutors say he is a member of a criminal gang linked to drug trafficking, kidnappings and extortion. He was reportedly present at the party attended by Pulido - a striker with Greek club Olympiakos - before he was kidnapped on Saturday.
