So, if you start a 3-4-3, with a midfielder as a backup you can't replace a forward with him, right?

I'm pretty sure the Prem fantasy website allows that formation, so I don't know why not.

I played a 3-4-3 with a mid as my sub. One of my defenders didnt play so that would leave me with only 2 defenders which is illegal. I guess thats poor management on my part and I shouldnt get the benefit of the sub, just a 0 for that defender correct?

Correct. Your sub has to be able to make one of the legal formations.
