*** I know nothing about Soccer ***

My son plays soccer. Just got selected for a U-11 travel team. He likes playing middle defender (which he is very good at). The coach emailed me and asked if he would agree to be the primary goal keeper and he can have his choice of positions when he is not keeping. I know he would choose middle defender when not keeping.

My question is, will this situation hamper his soccer development? Should I push him to get out of his comfort zone and try to improve as a striker? Or should I just let him enjoy soccer in the way he chooses?

I would never force him one way or the other, but he is a good kid and if I suggested he play striker more in order to improve those skills, I think he would do without complaint.

What would you guys do?

Let him play what he wants. As long as he plays on a good team with a good coach he will develop into a good player while having fun. Plus truthfully, if he can develop into a good defender, he will get much more playing time and opportunities than he would as a forward. Everyone wants to be a forward, so even just being an average defender will help him get playing time.

Exactly what he does. That and dig their asses out of a hole when they get the ball stolen while they are screwing around.

Is your son tall for his age? Do you think he'll end up being >6'?

So he's a defender but the coach wants to play him at goalie?

Several other kids indicated they do not want to play Goal keeper. He asked if my son would do it.

He is the best defender on the team and keeps other kids in correct space.

Maybe the coach should find someone besides his best defender to play goalkeeper. I would ask your son how he feels about it. If he wants to play keeper go for it, but I'm not sure that playing goalkeeper instead of defender would be good for his development.

if he's really the teams best defender, i don't think he should mess with moving to keeper.

is he the biggest kid on the team?

With how thin we are at LB, I've been kicking myself because I didn't take it more seriously growing up.

He's average size, but fairly aggressive. I talked to him about it. He's ok with the move to keeper.
