There's stoppage time within stoppage time for certain refs. Like if a team is purposely trying to kill time when the ball goes out, a ref might add some extra time.

It is what it is. Just depends on the game and what's happening.

Fine, well at some point in my family history, someone in my family lived in England... So therefore I'm not a bandwagon fan because I have family history

OK. I had a suspicion that was how it added up, but the last minute of stoppage time kinda drives me nuts... Why not finish it? It almost seems the ref gets to make a subjective call of when a game is over, instead of a concrete finish time.

Usually, the ref will call it after a team's chance has ended, so it would have taken that team likely a little bit to get the ball back anyway. It is subjective and not perfect, but it is pretty damn exciting not having a concrete ending.

So what is up with stoppage time?

It is (was) also referred to as "Fergie time"

Meaning when Slur Alex was in charge of Man United, the refs would make sure to milk it so that Man U could get that late equalizer/winner...

He's no longer in the league, so see previous answers...

Especially like that Watford game last year with the PK in stoppage time that caused the game to go like 4 minutes past what it was supposed to be

One of the best I've seen, honestly I'm glad the ref saw the chance building and let it go on instead of blowing it for PKs

Thanks Vick.

So that is generally what I was asking, but what makes a penalty or out of bounds play worth a certain result, i.e. a free kick, corner kick, things of that nature.

I have kinda caught on to the slide tackling limits. It seems like as long as you are trying to come into contact with the ball and not the player you are in the clear...

Another thing that intrigues me... The physicality allowed when fighting for the ball. If it is one on one, I have seen guys thrown out of the way/pushed down maliciously, and no penalty. It's almost as if the standing rule on jockeying for ball control between two players is "don't be a weak little bitch".

going to need to see your scouser roots

Anyone can try and call me out. I really give no fricks. My commitment to United is real and has been since I was a kid.

2003 as a broke fresh out of HS kid with nothing to my name me and my friends drove 5 hours up to NYC to see United play Juve at Giants stadium. We had no place to stay and 4 of us slept in an Eclipse.

Last year dropped mucho coinage to go to Manchester to see us win the league.

I'll just add, if you like Lukaku at Everton there's a certain team in the EPL and on your list that owns his contract.

For now...

they could probably call a foul/penalty on every single corner... going by letter of the law

You use the term "penalty" too loosely for soccer. A penalty is only awarded when a foul (warranting a direct free kick; we can explain this later) of some sort is committed inside the penalty area.

Any other time it is known simply as a foul. You can be called for a foul in many different ways. If your transgression is particularly bad you may be shown a yellow card (2 in 1 game = ejection or "sent off") or a red card which is a straight ejection.

ETA: If a "foul" is committed anywhere else on the field the offended team is awarded a free kick.

***For stoppage time it's better to think of it as "a minimum of X extra mins". The referee usually gives the teams at least that amount and will add on a little bit extra for stoppages in stoppage time.

Yeah, and that's why I hate Skrtel. He is a walking penalty on every corner kick. That handball today was blatant as hell. Haha

OK cool, that kinda clears it up.

I think it is funny watching these guys get pissed off, especially towards the end of the Liverpool match. Definitively read a woman's lips calling the ref a twat.

So how does the stack up of leagues in Europe work, in regards to relegation and finishing top four/five in the BPL?

As a LFC fan, we have a love/hate relationship with Skrtel...

He has scored more goals this season than many forwards in the EPL..

edit: I didn't think that was blatant, but it could have been called..

His more blatant fouls are when he grabs on to the opposing players jersey... really surprised he hasn't ever given up a PK for one of those..
