I have very mixed feelings about this. I'm not a Ronaldo fan, but it's hard to knock him for the order. As long as he was willing to take 1 of the 5 kicks it's fine.
BUT at the same time it seems very selfish and arrogant to demand the last shot in order to claim the glory. Isn't there enough glory in beating Spain and advancing to the final? I'm a big believer in having your best takers take their pk's early, not late.
That being said, Ronaldo should have stepped up and taken one sooner, but I'm not surprised considering how selfish Ronaldo is.

Damn jumbeaux bringing the heat I like it. Seriously it's not like he wanted to wait until it got to 1 on 1. What really Meade Bruno up was going up only to be called back by nani then going back up again. It messed with his head.

I'm not praising him for it. With that said, Spain's PK situation was much better than Portugal's.
I still firmly believe the captain and leader of the team should step up and take the first penalty. Lead by example. If Ronaldo would have taken one of the first 3, Portugal could be playing in the final.

You could say that if Cesc did so because he wanted to be the hero. Most people are assuming that's not the case.

I'm saying there's a difference.
First, Cesc is not the leader and captain of Spain's national team. While Xabi isn't the captain, he was the clear-cut leader on the pitch for Spain. And guess what? He took his first.
Second, it wasn't near as risky taking Spain's 5th as taking Portugal's 5th. Ronaldo had fricking Bruno Alves taking a pen before him. SMH. Cesc had Xabi, Iniesta, Pique and Ramos.
Third, I think it was stupid for Cesc to go 5th. It is easy to see how your chances increase when your best 3 PK takers go 1-3. I believe Cesc is one of their top 3 and going 5th is too risky.

Cesc prestige takes far less of a hit if the PKs don't go to five round than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Cristiano Ronaldo is a global brand known to far greater audience than Fabregas. If Cesc doesn't take the kick and Spain loses, PTI wouldn't be opening their show with that talking point, like the two hosts did immediately following that match.
The LeBron/Wade comparison doesn't work as well because those players are on a fairly equal star standing. LeBron's criticism comes from past late game disappearances.
Also, by kicking first Spain has a statistical advantage in that 60% of PKs are won by the team shooting first, and a majority of penalty kicks (not sure of the exact percentage) don't even reach the 10th taker. Fabregas had a higher chance of taking his kick than Ronaldo.
