Well they had four 2nd place finishes in the Copa America and one 2nd place finish in the WC. That's all since 2004.

Their problems are they don't have a linking player deep in midfield. It's why European teams have generally done better in the WC post-2002, as the teams with the best DLP generally tends to win tournaments.

Yeah this is what frustrates me about the criticism of Messi for Argentina. The second best player for Argentina at the World Cup was Mascherano playing out of position as effectively a DLP. They have like seven world class forwards and wingers, and zero world class midfielders, unless you consider Messi a midfielder based on his average positioning for Argentina. The 2010 and 2014 World Cup teams were built the same way.

Messi is the only player with the requisite skills to link up play for the Argentine national team. In the 10-odd years since Messi started playing for the senior international team, Argentina hasn't produced one decent holding midfielder. Hell, give Argentina Michael Bradley and you'll at least have someone who can link up play from behind Messi.

Mascherano is a good enough passer, but he's tasked with doing too much if he's supposed to start play and be responsible for defending. Last summer when I watched Argentina play in Seattle, Matias Kranevitter seemed like a player who could help Mascherano with some of that responsibility, but he hasn't imposed himself. Gago tried filling that role to limited effect. Another option could have been to drop Pastore deeper and protect him with midfield runners, but that would unbalance an already lopsided team. Banega could have been that player too.

They've also had problems with the employment of all those players in the right system. If you want to build around Messi then they should commit to building around him.

I remember when he transferred to Barca, most people did not see him fitting in with their style of play...

He was at his best as the destroyer in a double pivot, with Alonso as the DLP... He's never had that with Argentina, like you said... I've hated him playing as a CB so often for Barca, but when you have Busquets in front of him... it's hard to see the field in that role...

I'm actually impressed with Mascherano's passing for Barca. But I think Barca have had a coherence in positioning that national teams rarely can achieve. Mascherano isn't nearly as bad at passing as he was at Liverpool.

You could argue that the Messi-led Argentina succeeded despite massive mismanagement from the AFA.

I also though Banega was going to be that guy for Argentina... but injuries, off the field weirdness.. it never worked out for him... and he started playing more and more advanced...

Yeah I thought Banega circa 2010 was going to be a star.

I'm calling shenanigans, clearly Ramos has a clause in his contract where he gets a big bonus if he gets a red card in El Clasico matches

That was one of the stupidest, most wreckless, and most pointless things that I've seen him do, and he does a lot of stupid shite.
