Arsene seems a little desperate honestly.

They'll never bid that much, but I'd sell anyone for north of £70mm...

I'm still confused why Arsenal is getting ripped for bidding what they were told by Suarez's people was his buyout figure. if it isn't, so be it. I'm just tired of us getting ripped by 'pool fans, especially after your club's pursuit of Dempsey last year.

Isn't that tapping up? Talking to his people before coming to the club first?
Posted on 8/7/13 at 4:28 pm to kilo
This is very uncharacteristic for him to say the least.
I really thought they would have gone for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
That fits Arsene's style more.

Because it is illegal?

There is only one reason why I would be ripping Arsenal for this:
It's Arsenal and y'all never buy anything ...

actually it's more than that, we got a decent fee for gervinho
also, it isn't illegal, Beast. it may be against the rules, but only in extreme circumstances is it penalized (see: Ashley Cole) or publicly shamed (see: you guys with Dempsey). these days tapping up isn't generally done in a manner that's punishable because the indirect ways of leaking release clauses, Player X wants out, etc are effective. to rip us for operating in the normal way things happen is pretty ridiculous. I'm sure Liverpool has triggered the release clauses it has this summer through pure luck! we can't all afford to fire and hire managers in order to become privy to the release clauses of the Joe Allens of the football world!

I think people just find the extra 1 pound to be a bit of a slap in the face.

frick arsenal. maybe it was or maybe it wasn't technically against the rules but arsenal's interference has caused the situation to turn ugly.
If arsene had stayed out of the media and bid something in the range that is feasible, they might have had him already. But instead they engage in this sneaky arse bullshite they cooked up with guardiola trying to get him on the cheap and in the process Suarez starts to think it'll work and opens his mouth
So yeah frick arsenal and frick arsene
70 mil for you 50 for you anybody outside the PL
You can add 70 mil for tots or Everton or anyone else that might compete for fourth everybody else in the PL is 50

yeah, cheeky for sure. but if you are operating under the assumption that is the release clause or at least a negotiation clause, why bid anymore than you have to? certainly not up to the level of scorn which has been heaped upon us. if a clause is 40m you bid that. if it says more than 40m you do some Price is Right shite
and extreme, chill a little bit bro. I don't think us and guardiola cooked anything specific up. sure we're a player in this increasingly nasty situation, but Suarez and Liverpool haven't exactly acted as perfect gentleman either in the scenario.

Its great business. Just insulting on a personal (if you can call it that) level, considering the clause is ambiguous and likely says nothing that Arsenal or Suarez want it to say. Seems like Arsenal are playing the situation when they know the clause says nothing of the sort.

Eh, I'm not all that mad at Arsenal. Its backhanded, but it is a business.

I agree, its just after the PFA official came out today with his opinion it seems like Suarez and Arsenal are attempting to sow discord to get him on the cheap. Shady business at best, at worst, blatant corporate sabotage.

I would assume Arsenal have seen the clause. I can't imagine they'd take the word of some guy to bid 40 without looking into if that's what they actually should bid. And if they saw the clause they most certainly knew what they were doing. At least according to the PFA.

I don't really see how Liverpool have acted out of line. They don't want to sell to a rival. Luis can "claim" BR told him whatever he wants to claim, but no idiot in his right mind would ever say "sure we'll make sure you get transferred to a CL side within the country whom we'll be directly competing with." On top of that, Suarez's comments in the spring go against that entirely.
I'm not saying Arsenal are total assholes. But they most definitely knew what was going on here. Its just business. Welcome to the corporate world Scouser supporters.

I don't expect you to understand until you are on the opposite end. To make an initial bid, followed by a bid of £1 more is a sneaky and rather insulting thing for a top club to do. Clearly our owner felt the same way the fans do.
The entire move just reeks of desperation to be honest, and once Wenger realized what they had done didn't work, he immediately came out and tried to resolve the situation by saying he would be "respectful" or whatever the word was to Liverpool.
What likely happened is Arsenal made the initial bid, and then LFC responded with "that is nowhere near where we value him, especially when selling to y'all." Arsenal contacted Guardiola and then made the second bid of £1 more, essentially ignoring what LFC told them and going behind their back. This time LFC respond with "lolz, frick you" and now Arsenal look like jackasses for the bid, and probably made it much more difficult on themselves.
And fwiw what LFC did with Dempsey was not right. Negotiations were ongoing and Henry's company in Boston prematurely released the news that he had been signed. Fulham got pissed because LFC "unsettled the player" or whatever the claim was. It was a different type of "tapping up." Conspiring with the player's agent behind the club's back may not be illegal like I said, that was poor wording, but it is certainly considered taboo, especially among clubs who are understood to have a good relationship.

Guardiola is an agent of some of our players as well, so I'm sure he already has a relationship with the FO.. I don't think it's hard to believe that he gave us an idea of what to do because he wants his player to move so he gets money.
Posted on 8/7/13 at 6:51 pm to Jumbeauxlaya
Yea, exactly. Which like I said is frowned upon.
I really don't care. It is what it is. But I can see why the club would be annoyed.

I don't think Wenger knows what to do with all that money. I could easily see how he wouldn't think the 1 dollar over would be insulting.
