The Messi case: prosecutors recommend 22 months in jail

The judge in court numer 3 in Gavá has made preliminary deliberations on the Messi case; prosecutors are recommending 22 and a half months incarceration.

Messi will be seated in the accused seats of the courtroom awaiting his fate next to his father, they are charged with three crimes involving tax fraud. Crimes which carry a potential sentence of 22 and a half months behind bars.

The Messi case will be presided over by a penal judge from the Vilanova i la Geltrú district in Barcelona, and the global superstar will sit in the accused dock next to his father despite his apparent acquittal as the Spanish 'fiscalia' recognised he was not aware of his father’s fraudulent activities.

The judge deemed Messi’s presence mandatory in the trial because the state prosecutor considers him “co-author” of the three offences that saw his father defraud the state of €4.1 million euro in taxes.
