I don't think it is hipster/elitist. I also don't think is un-American. Americans have long held affinities for players who they "feel" are better. Players who "do the little things" or "play the right way," etc. when you point to statistical evidence they'll likely argue that you don't get it and that he does so many little things that don't show up on the box score.
The only difference is, we've found ways to quantify every little thing in baseball, basketball, and football. There's been less of that in soccer. At least that has been made public.

Well Barca has in a lot of ways developed the DLP as we know it today. Fabregas, Iniesta, and Xavi all started out as defensive midfielders/DLP's, so I'm sure they could play there, but Xavi sets their tempo like no other. Barca aren't toothless by any means when Xavi doesn't play, but they lack the elite fluidity that we see when they are playing a full side.

The problem with soccer metrics is that much of it still falls in the grey area between subjective and objective.
They also require much more re-watching of game tape than say just looking at a baseball box score and figuring out OPS or WHIP.

i think zones/ranges are going to be the main dividing factors
zones become subjective based on who gets to draw the lines, but they can be useful, like with zone factor in baseball
ranges become subjective for the same reason, but the NFL is becoming much more advanced with these metrics, like with "deep passing" stats in the NFL
people just need to know that these are only metrics and aren't a single factor to judge everyone on a list

Defensive statistics in baseball suck terribly. Clearly, you can quantify nearly anything these days. The problem is trying to figure out what traits gives you the best chance to win. That's still up in the air in every sport. Liverpool, quite reasonably, went after set piece specialists. Their data apparently led them to the conclusion that was an efficient way to win. Didn't work out (at least in a quick time frame) so they bailed. There are a lot of facts out there to be mined. We still don't know how they all fit together.

Yeah I had heard that. Very interesting. A little stupid for MCFC to do IMO, but cool for us in the public.
