He was also out for an incredible amount of time. He absolutely destroyed Man City in that game a couple of years ago.

At his peak, he was maybe the best midfielder in the Bundesliga. Hopefully he gets it back.

It could, but I fail to see where he fits in to what is honestly a very hodge-podge Man U team. He's a more active player than Carrick, and is less defensively involved than Blind. He could be that link player, but then you have to consider what to do with Felliani, Mata, Young, and Di Maria.
I think Man U is doing the same approach as Man City in response to falling out of the top four. Lots of buying the best player with little consideration if they are the right player. The difference is that Man U can do it within the rules, which shouldn't give them a pass. They've been winning on talent alone.

I think some are seeing him as Carrick's replacement.
DiMaria def falls into the buying the wrong player category, and he might be done this summer. Other than him all the buys have been pretty good as the season has progressed. Even Shaw is coming around.

I think the role Carrick plays as a deep-lying midfielder can't be underrated. I think the first goal against Everton wouldn't have happened if Carrick was on the field, as Blind was about 10-15 yards too high upfield, and would have been in perfect position to challenge for the second ball if he had been positioned correctly. I don't see Gundogan being able to play that role. And honestly, Carrick is a rare player who is supremely underrated. He's been excellent for a long time, and it is amazing to me that he could never get into the England side. He will be extremely hard to replace. He's the one player outside of Rooney that I wish Arsenal had. He's basically been one of the top DLP's in the game the last decade or so, but doesn't get the plaudits of Pirlo and Xavi (he's a level below these players in my opinion) because he's not flashy in any respect.

I really think in a year or two we could see Herrera filling that role. But he is so damn versatile. He can play in an advanced role, a classic box to box or in the holding role.

I like it, but LvG seems to REALLY like Fellaini and he also REALLY likes playing Mata where you have ADM.
I'm all for keeping him, just won't cry if we get some good cash for him. If he stays, I think he has a much better season next year.
Keep in mind, statistically, he is on par with Coutinho who supposedly had a good enough season to land him on the team of the year.
