How good is Abby Wambach?

And how good does she make the women's national team?
I very rarely watch soccer (so I don't know what I'm looking for when I do watch), but she just seems like an absolute beast out there when I do tune in. Seems like she completely opens up the field offensively for us, and is always a home run/deep threat. Not sure how big she is, but she is also a fairly imposing player who almost seems like the enforcer in a hockey game.
Again, I don't watch much but these are the impressions I get from a quick viewing here and there. I'm sure I'm wrong on much of this, so please correct me where necessary (ie: Alex Morgan is probably the true home run threat?).
So tldr.....I know, but basically how good is Wambach on an international level? How good does she make this team? Or how good would this team be without her?

She is great at knowing where to be (Positional Awareness, a very important attribute for a striker) and when you combine that with her physical dominance and Rapinoe's excellent crosses.. = goals.

Is Rapinoe the one with the assist in extra time against the Brazilians? Think she just had a beautiful cross to AM as well in the NZ game.

She's about 5'11" 175 I believe.

weird.. I would be a dominating force in the women's game then because I'm the same +5 lbs...

Maybe for other boards, but IMO the SB appreciates a full thought.
You basically nailed it though. The past few years Alex has been slowly taking over the deep runs.

Just did a little looking around. Why were neither AM nor AW on the Beijing team? I'm assuming Morgan was too young, but what about Abby?

Well Morgan was a sub in the World Cup last year. She was used in every game but one. So her being a regular starter did not begin until after the WC.

Abby was hurt I think (broken leg) and Morgan was still too young. I don't think she was on the senior national scene yet.

Abby is all attack. Mia was much more of a playmaker, played more defense, had more assists and was better at involving other players. She also played some midfield.
Goals alone don't tell the story.
