Mandeville and St Paul dominate highest classification at the state level.

Not sure about BR.

Woodlawn went to the state semis in Div. II last year and finished the season ranked #3.

St. Amant and Catholic are pretty strong Div. I teams and Episcopal and U-High are good Div. III teams.

The high school soccer talent in BR is really diluted among so many schools, so there isn't really one dominant powerhouse program here like there is in much of the state. For example, St. Paul's and Mandeville get almost all of the Mandeville-Covington area talent, St. Louis Catholic gets all of the Lake Charles talent, Jesuit and Brother Martin get the NOLA talent, and Acadiana currently gets most of the Lafayette area talent.

St. Paul's is the best team in the state, and with Jesuit being down, nobody is really challenging them at the moment. They should win their fourth straight D-I title this year. Mandeville and Acadiana are likely their only competition, and I think St. Paul's will still go undefeated against LA competition again this year. Catholic and St. Amant will be good this year in the BR area.

D-II is very wide open. Holy Cross and STM look to be the best teams again, along with Beau Chene. Woodlawn made a nice run to the semifinals last year. Not sure what they bring back this season.

D-III is very competitive in the BR area. University, Parkview, Episcopal, and St. Michael all have solid soccer programs and compete in the same district. We (St. Michael) had a really good team (#2 seed in the playoffs) two seasons ago when we played up in D-II, and we should be a Top 10 team again this year after having a young team last year. University are probably the favorites, but the gap between them and the other 3 isn't as big as last year. St. Louis Catholic though should be favored as state champs until proven otherwise. The Saints have won state titles 6 of the last 7 years, but lost a lot of great seniors from a team that won 31 of 36 matches last year. Vandebilt Catholic in Houma will likely step up if St. Louis finally has a down year.

D-IV was just created last year. Newman and Northlake Chrisitan played for the title last year. Wouldn't be surprised at a repeat.

Who won D-III last year? And why did they create D-IV?

Heavily favored St. Louis came from behind to beat surprise E.D White 3-2 in the D-III title game last year. They played up to D-II from 2010-13 and won four straight titles before dropping back down to D-III in 2014 and winning 2 of the 3 since then. Coach Oertling does an amazing job with that program. Love watching them play.

They added a fourth division because we felt the level of competition in the three divisions was sufficient and adding a fourth division would give small schools a better chance of starting their programs. We went from 32-team brackets in 3 divisions to 24-team brackets in 4 divisions. I think it went well last year. Eventually we'll have 32-team brackets in the 4 divisions, but the quality depth isn't there yet. Maybe 10 years from now it will be.

University won the BR district last year. It should be more competitive this year, as Episcopal and St. Michael both have senior-heavy teams this year.

when I was in high school, the best teams were Jesuit, Brother Martin, Lafayette High, Caddo Magnet and Captain Shreve got good for a year or two, Acadiana was pretty good. There was no real threat from Baton Rouge.

There still isn't a BR threat, really. Our teams almost never make the title game. I think the talent level in Baton Rouge soccer is comparable to NOLA and Mandeville, it's just our talent gets split out so much between a lot of schools compared to those other areas. Even the smaller schools like us and Episcopal get lots of good club players.

If Caddo Magnet was good when you played, that sounds like mid to late 2000s to me. Would that be right? I think Jesuit will get back on track soon, they just haven't been much of a factor the past three years, despite making the title game in 2015.

St Paul's should run away with it again. For reference, CHS lost 6-0 in scrimmage with them last week and tied Acadiana 1-1 last night in first game. St Paul's playing on a much higher level than everyone else.

In Texas, 6A has 128 teams in the playoffs, 5A has 128 teams in the playoffs and 4A has 114 teams. Remarkable how many more teams we have here...

Population:
Texas - 27 Million
Louisiana - 4.65 Million

Not too mention that Texas has a much greater hispanic population.

Too early to say for Lee. They are rebuilding as a school. Decent team from what little I saw of them last year. I think we play them this year.

Baton Rouge Magnet underperforms with the talent they have, IMO. Consistent second round team, but rarely anything more.

Yeah, Magnet was competive in D-II, but they can't compete with the St.
Paul's of the world in D-I.
