Hopefully.
Jozy's ability to hold up play was vastly missed last night, and a big part of why our midfield struggled so much.
I love Aron, but he was out of place vs. Ghana. Sadly, we didn't have a like for like switch for Jozy, which is why bringing Boyd may have made sense.

Dempsey's no target forward, though. He's like Aron. He's best playing off someone and running forward. He's a goal facer. I don't know how well those two play together.

Funnily enough, I think it was the exact opposite. He couldn't hold the ball long enough for those guys to make runs and find space. Jozy, on his worst day, can hold off a pressing center back and play a ball into feet. Aron really struggled to do that vs. Ghana.

I am really worried about being able to maintain possession in the final third. Jozy's hold-up play will be sorely missed.
Dempsey lives to make absurd moves and give up possession, Aron is a second striker that would play well off of Jozy, and Wondo is a technical poacher.
This could be a real challenge to build a lineup now with how thin we are up front. Too bad rosters lock.

i could see your point re: dempsey's play. bradley was just awful though. dempsey playing off aron wasn't getting service because aron wasn't getting service, and struggled the few times he did get decent service.
bradley was just terribly inaccurate. aron's chances to receive the ball were minimal. he didn't do great when he had the chance though. that said, would have helped us if deuce had dropped deeper to get the ball or help out defensively. i honest to god would have no idea what his heat map looked like because i don't remember deuce touching the ball more than once or twice after his nose break. he was just out of it. he couldn't drop deeper to defend and still expend effort to push our attack forward.
that formation was implemented pretty much solely to allow Bradley and Dempsey to shine and they were very poor yesterday (outside deuce's goal). that's why i put it on them as opposed to aron.
i have no idea what the answer is tactically bc i don't want any part of wondo in the starting lineup. we put too much on jozy's health.

Probably width and sending in service from the wings.
Might be smart to move Fabian to midfield and have him doubling on CR7, too, and making runs behind.

hmmm maybe. that wouldn't help our possession problem but perhaps we should concede that vs Portugal? and we still wouldn't really have strikers who are great at getting on the end of crosses (in fairness, jozy really doesn't either). I'd go back to a 4231 but that seems unlikely.

I think the midfield struggled because AJ wasn't providing an outlet. He wasn't checking back to the ball, almost every run he was making was vertical. It's like he expected to be fed the final ball everytime we picked up possesion, forcing our midfield into low % passes.
