As you all know, I'm the paid publicist for both skeletor and wondo. I also collect a paycheck to disparage Jozy Altidore given any opportunity.

I wanna think what the Soccer board thinks Wondo's career prospects are. I was reading this fluffpiece from mlssoccer.com and it brought some interesting stats to my attention. He's scored 11 goals in 10 matches so far this season. He's on pace to score 37 goals in 34 matches, shattering Roy Lassiter's record of 27 scored in the inaugural MLS season. Wondo has 17 goals in his last 15 league matches.

So I ask two questions. 1) If Wondo keeps up his tear, San Jose stays at the top of the table, and Wondo makes an impact with the nats, where does he go at the end of the season?
2) What do you actually think will happen?

Things to keep in mind:
Wondo is 29. He'll be 31 by the world cup. He isn't fast, he isn't big, and he isn't quick. He displays decent ball control and technical skill, but he's really just a classic goal poacher. Most of the time when he scores, he's wide open. But how does someone who has led the league in scoring for the past three years manage that? His first time on the big stage he choked against panama, sending a potential game tying sitter into the stands. But he's always been clutch for the quakes.

If he starts for us in important US games:

I think he'll be given one more opportunity in the upcoming qualifiers but I'm not sure he'll do well. I think I'm a little more willing than the rest of the Soccer Board to see him get that chance, though.

The MLS contingent on this board likes him. However, he is what he is, a savvy MLS player with some technical ability. He's a good player, but I don't think he's World Cup quality. He's a guy I'd start against El Salvador away in qualifying to give those bastards something different to think about.

I mean as of now, I don't mind him getting a call up. As long as it isn't a very important game.

BUT, I'd rather see these guys play forward or get his call up.

Dempsey, Donovan, Altidore, Agudelo, Boyd, Gomez.

MAYBE Buddle. He is in an awful form right now. He doesn't deserve a call up but he has been able to score on the international level.

My personal opinion of him is that he's the new twellman. I know that is going to sound harsh but TT had an incredible mls career and if not for concussions would probably have ended his career as the all time leading scorer. For the usmnt however he just never was able to elevate his game to the next level. I think they are guys who over achieve and who's limited physical tools are overcome in mls by hard work and desire.

Just FYI I understand they are very different players and Wondo has not been given the opportunities twellman was in the past and could very well prove me wrong

It seems like Klinnsman's preferred formation is some sort of 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1, Jozy up top with Clint playing off of him as a number 10. I just don't see where Wondo fits in unless we were going to go with two out and out strikers. Maybe as a late sub.

I don't dislike him as much as some people on here do (I seem to remember thinking his missed "sitter" wasn't as much of a sitter as it was made out to be, but I haven't seen the video in a while), but he's just nothing special on the international level.

Meh, it should have been a goal but there have been far far worse misses. It was coming across with a lot of pace and at kind of an awkward height. He had to react quickly and make sure he got on top of it so he wouldn't sky it, which obviously he didn't do. If it had been played on the floor I'm sure he would have scored.

It doesn't have any real relevance to me as to whether he should play or not. I just don't think he's quite good enough, but its not like we have a lot of good options after Jozy. Herc? Buddle? I guess Agudelo.

What kind of logic is this? Just because there have been worse misses in the world of football doesn't mitigate how awful that miss was. In the goal mouth 3 yards from goal is the definition of a sitter. The fact he couldn't get over the ball is perhaps indicative of a lack of composure needed at the international level. It's not like it was world class opposition.

Wondo might be useful for a few call ups as our striker pool isn't all that deep. He can be this cycle's Conor Casey.

that it wasn't the sitter of all sitters like some make it out to be.

That's a bit rigid isn't it? There are no mitigating circumstances? It was a pretty bad miss but a much worse miss would be is if it had been laid on more of a tee, i.e., on the floor, with less pace, etc.

I don't know why I've involved myself in the Wondo debate to be honest I'm not interested in seeing him on the national team fwiw. I just don't think it was the historically bad miss like some make it out to be.

Seriously though, it was one miss and him and Dempsey practically ran into each other..

I believe the following quote describes him best:
quote:

Sapong uses his physicality to occupy defenders, Wondo has some sort of mental aikido that makes them forget he exists.

Matthew Doyle has him on the list:

Unfortunately that argument lends itself to his game not translating to the international level.. because defense will be better and not forget..

It was an awful miss whether you compare it to other misses or not. There are very few excuses from three yards out. Dempsey might have scared him, but his positioning nor his line of sight are seemingly affected, and he doesn't make contact with Dempsey until the ball has already gone over the crossbar. It's a pretty terrible miss in most every imaginable way. I'm not sure how this is an argument.

Also, my position is that Wondo isn't good enough for the international level, and I've been against his selection for a while, so that colors my bias, but I actually forgot about that miss and how awful it was.

Dempsey being near him had nothing to do with it IMO. The fact that Jozy's ball was struck with a lot of pace and that it was at a bit of an awkward height is why I think it wasn't such a horrible miss. A bad miss, but not that horrible.

I agree that Wondo isn't international level though. But how many of our strikers are "international level" is a good question.

I think Jozy is the only one that could be considered international level. Unless you're counting Dempsey as a striker.

Not to turn this into the "American strikers thread", but holy shite its awful. I know we all want Agudelo to be great but shouldn't he at least lock down a starting job in the MLS first?

When has he, at any point, looked as good as Kenny Cooper this year? And I do not, at all, want Cooper to be a starter for the national team in meaningful games. Juan's got potential (a lot of these guys don't have that) but at this point that's all.

I like Herc, kind of. He's 30 or so, he's decent. Meh. He should get a look.

Wondo is Wondo. A good finisher in the MLS, hasn't shown it internationally and really doesn't add anything besides being a poacher.

Boyd? Who knows? Again, potential.

Buddle hasn't exactly looked great lately.

Jozy up top, Dempsey in the hole, hope they don't get hurt.

And the fact that... it wasn't a terrible miss and it was only one miss.

Should he be permanently disqualified from contending for the squad because of one failure?

I'm not even pro wondo.. just neutral, just like pointing out flawed arguments when I see them.

I agree, obviously. Wondo's pretty limited though.

Is Herc that much better though? I don't know. I like Herc better but it's not like he's on a different level. In MLS at least, Wondo's been a lot better.

All we've seen of Boyd is the one cameo versus Italy where he looked like a guy who plays in the reserves (a good reserve team but a reserve team).

I would go with Jozy up top, Clint in the hole, with Agudelo on the team (why not, at least he has potential), and one of Juan/Herc/Wondolowski/Buddle to come off the bench if we want to go to two strikers late in a game we're losing. Carry three strikers along with Dempsey, Donovan, etc.

I'm not sold on Agudelo honestly though.. he's been hyped etc for a while and I haven't seen anything really. The potential might be there, but he needs to move over to the eredivise or bundesliga imo.

Also did you notice you're about 5 posts from 10k?
