right now, pretty good. maybe in the 45-55% chance range. he needs to decide soon though. think it's way easier to get citizenship as a minor.
I am concerned he wouldn't get a work permit if he got US citizenship. I think he loses his EU passport if he gets US citizenship.

FOBUD I've heard that work permit issues won't be a problem because he has German citizenship. I get the "no dual citizenship" thing but it's not like ze Germans are going to rip up his passport.
The way I understand Zelalem's plight is that he feels american and talks like an American. He spent his formative years in our country. He went to one German youth team camp and felt out of place. His dad has applied for citizenship and I think may be married to an American or something and if he gets his citizenship before Gedion turns 18 then Gedion automatically gets citizenship.
The problem is what happens if Zelalem turns 18 before his dad gets citizenship. There are then residency requirements that kick in and I think it would basically be impossible for him to play for us after that because there is no chance he lives in the U.S. unless he flames out at Arsenal and gets picked up by an MLS team or something.
His birthday is in January. Time's a tickin.

I've followed Zelelams situation closely... And feel we have a very good shot of getting him. 70%. All the signs are pointing to him playing for us.
Biggest reason is because he backed out of playing with Germany's youth natl team when he found out it would cap tie him to Germany. And when he was at that German camp, felt out of place.
And because he identifies himself as American, talks like a normal 17yo American, and formed his own identity and personality in America. If he lived here for a few more months before moving to Arsenal, he would already be a citizen.
And in regards to his EU work permit, cwil177 is correct. He's a Germany citizen right now and therefore automatically has a work permit. He can get a work permit, no problem, right now. If he becomes a naturalized citizen of America, he would lose him German citizenship status. But still would have his work permit. It's almost like a loophole. It's tough getting a work permit for over there if you aren't a citizen there and all that. But since he's been a citizen over there, it won't be as difficult.
His Dad has already applied for citizenship and it's just a waiting game now as the process runs its course. Once his Dad gets his passport and citizenship, Zelalem automatically becomes a US citizen due to some Childcare Act. That has to happen before he turns 18, which is late January. But even if that occurs, Zelalem can still apply for his own citizenship to the U.S. But it will take a lot longer and pretty much starts the process completely over.
And Gedion and his father were in DC finalizing the naturalization process in late April. I wouldn't be surprised if they have their passports and are citizens already, and just keeping it quiet until Gedion wants to announce where he will be playing, which should happen near his birthday.

Honestly I'd have to say another CDM. That's great in holding possession and marking. And another Striker with elite speed that can create for himself. More depth at CB would be nice. I was impressed with Besler, Gonzalez, and Brooks. Cameron started off hot, but cooled. Johnson and Yedlin are the future at RB&LB

i'm not sure anyone really has any idea about anything in this situation. mainly because the story has changed frequently since he came to Arsenal. the most recent report which dealt with it in any detail (but said they'd be US citizens already) is this. from my shitty german citizenship wikipedia research, it looks like because he wouldn't be voluntarily becoming a citizen of another country (since he'd get US citizenship through his dad) which would allow him to keep his work permit. Though it also looks like he'd have 3 years to prove that he actually deserves a work permit because his German citizenship would expire then (since he's a citizen solely bc of birth in Germany to immigrant parents and is maintaining a foreign citizenship).

i agree the clock is ticking, but it isn't a done deal. every second prior to his decision that he spends in England, away from the US and around a very Germanic Arsenal side isn't good for our chances (though it may not be awful).
as for the German U17 thing, i think that's a positive sign, but it's also worth bailing on meaningless football to keep your options open.
the "he's already a citizen but hiding it" angle is interesting, though WaPo has been all over it, and I'm sure naturalization records are available somehow. seems like that couldn't be a secret you could hide. that would be nice though.

Very. There are so many laws and bylaws and certain circumstances and all these ins and outs.
And I don't know... I would think naturalization records would be kept private for the most part. You get a passport or whatever and you can present that to certain people and organizations that need proof. But other than that, I would think it's somewhat private.
