Know how I know you don't know soccer?
And thus the reason I asked.
One reason soccer never takes off in the States?
Because so many of the existing fan base are douches and new fans that might be interested are like "frick that sport." I'll stick to football, baseball and basketball.

Yea but if you identify a great athlete early on, and only let them play soccer, good shite will happen
This is never going to happen in the US until football is no longer around and soccer is more popular than baseball. Neither of those are coming in the near future.

things are changing
the biggest issue is getting people to understand that college soccer is bullshite, which they finally are
we're not even seeing our first full generation of non-college players right now

And china and India have over a billion people each. They are both laughably bad.

We'll soon start getting those 6'4" guys that are borderline for bball. I think the next soccer greats will come from the South or Cali where soccer is a winter sport. Kid that is a great CB in football, but maybe a hair too slow for big time football. Soccer is now a viable career option for these kids.

This is the most ignorant argument people who don't know soccer can make. One of the greatest soccer players in the world, and one of the greatest to ever play, is 5'8 and slow as frick. It takes much more than elite Athleticism to be a world class soccer player.
Imagine if some of the guys with elite size, speed, and athleticism played soccer. It would be downright scary

This x1000. I don't like our youth players going overseas to the European youth academies because it can cause some conflicts in who they end up playing for if they earn dual citizenship, but that's what it takes right now. The US has to do 1 of 2 things:
1. Set up similar youth academies for the MLS, and not half arse it..
2. Make more of an effort to identify talented youth players and get them into the academies overseas.

our MLS teams need to have more partnerships with euro teams and give up the kids

Bottom line is you train a guy like Russell Westbrook to play soccer his whole life and he is likely the GOAT. The dude is bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic than the best soccer player in the world

not necessarily

yeah but now you're getting into the aerobic v inaerobic issue. ignoring skill development (which we need), he won't be that explosive in soccer
now...do we have tens of thousands of superior athletes wasting their careers playing backup 1/2 or CB/S on 1AA/D2 teams? yes. if we got all of those athletes, we would be able to be the current US team on steroids. i hope for this day.
but the US is already one of, if not the, most athletic team in the world cup

Dude you can go ahead and get over this pipe dream right now. Athletes like Westbrook, Rondo, and CP3 with not play soccer in our lifetime.
Posted on 7/1/14 at 6:10 pm to roscoe mike
Probably what's needed is enough fan interest in pro soccer in the US to make it more lucrative for players.
Posted on 7/1/14 at 6:11 pm to RB10
They won't but the "what if" factor is intriguing to me
Posted on 7/1/14 at 6:12 pm to NawlinsTigah270
You have to train him correctly though. Nothing about our current training infrastructure suggests he'd be any better than what we currently have. Hopefully that's changing.

to be fair, most of them don't play soccer in places like germany/france, either

Can't say I fully understand this part but obviously development is important

I know that. I'm just saying it's not going to happen here anytime soon. If the US wants to seriously compete for the WC then it's all on US Soccer to identify the young talent early and get them into the academies.

This is exactly what I saw in Munich 4 days ago and Switzerland today. This is what their kids are doing. All day everyday.
