Can someone explain/defend Joachim Low's decisions?

Why did he bench Podolski, Muller, and especially Gomez?

None of them were at risk for a yellow card suspension, and they were all playing well so far in the tournament, especially Gomez.

Did something happen off the field, either a fight in the locker room or poor discipline? I don't understand any other reasoning.

I realize Reus, Gotze, and Schurrler are all very talented guys, and Klose is an all-time leading scorer, but why tinker with an attacking unit that has been doing so well? It could have had an impact on the confidence of a guy like Gomez, and if the unthinkable happened and the Greeks somehow won the game, I think the DFB would have been entirely justified in firing Low, due to the completely unnecessary tinkering.

Seems like he is trying to out-think himself and is creating issues when there shouldn't be any.

The people who seem to know the team well suggest they did it specifically for the greece game plan, to free up ozil more and with introducing more young players felt that he wanted the experience of klose out there

This. I think it was basically a "one match" squad to defeat Greece, with their disciplined defense.

I expect we'll see the regular starters next round.

I believe they were all tactical. At least the Gomez one was.

I don't full understand why Low does what he does, but if the results are the same then I dot see how anyone can take issue with him.

Low has said how much he admired Ozil for changing for the team. I think the move to bring on Klose is to "unleash" Ozil in a way.

Gomez is a very good striker around the penalty area but Klose is better at making runs around the middle 3rd of the field. You bring in Klose who will check back for the ball, and you really let Ozil's pace and smart runs come in to play more. He'll be able to drift out wide with this formation as well.

Muller and Poldi were really good at staying wide and providing a lot of width in the attack for the group stages. They did their jobs perfectly. Now I'm guessing Jogi wants to allow the free flowing style to come back. You have Reus who loves to cut inside and get the ball and you have Schurrle who makes really smart runs and can provide depth.

So half the time when Germany is attacking, it will look like two strikers (Klose and Schurrle) and 2 attacking mids (Reus and Ozil) with the width coming from Lahm and Boateng.

That's what I posted pre game. It turned out to be mostly true. Reus stayed wider than I thought. He was fantastic.

You clearly know the German players much better than I do, but doesn't it seem like an unnecessary risk to tinker with a line-up that was doing so well? I see your point. There could be some areas for improvement with the newer guys, but it's not a guarantee. And I doubt that the regulars would have played worse than their subs.

It could affect the confidence of most players who didn't feature today, and in my opinion, Klose actually blew a ton of chances that Gomez may have converted.

And why design a new line-up just for Greece (if that's what Low is doing)? It seems too meddlesome and unnecessary. Will the main guys play again in the semis?

While Gomez is very athletic and tends to put himself in good positions he can be very wasteful. Klose is a better finisher IMO

Klose is a better finisher than Gomez. Gomez may be the best guy in the world in getting himself to the right spots but he does waste a lot. Great player nonetheless.

I think Low learned a lot today. He had a hunch that some guys on the bench may give him more than his normal starters. Reus earned himself another start, IMO.

Low isn't afraid to be bold, so I don't think he cares if people are second guessing his decisions.

I saw several times today that klose seemed just out of reach of a ball that I think Gomez would have at least got a foot to

It's not talked about a lot and I don't know his shot conversion rate but Van Perdie actually misses alot of shots....but as was said part of being good is getting in those situations

Germany neede more pace agility and on the ball dribbling skill none of which their usually starting line up have a whole lot of imo
Reus goal was a great strike but apart from that I didn't think he was in the game enough to definitely secure a spot but wouldn't shock me to see Podolski get dropped

Were you paying attention? Reus was very good. He made good runs and linked up with everyone really well. He could have easily had 3 goals by himself. He looked much better than Podolski has

Yes I was, I really rate the guy, he had the chance early in the 1st half but after that I didn't see him do much for the rest of the half
Obviously the attack goes through Ozil but given that pace and on the ball skills are what led to him getting the start I think Low probably would have wanted him to get behind the back 4 as much as possible, where as Schurrle was obviously told to cut in and shoot when possible which he did a lot in the 1st, obv didn't score but was very effective

Reus was miles better than Schurrle. He was the third best player on the field for me today right behind Ozil and Khedira. There was not many chances to get behind Greece because they played 11 behind the ball the entire game. He had to work within the framework of the team and he did it brilliantly. Much better on the ball than Podolski and I think Ozil created better with him as well.

Like I said I think Schurrle was given his game plan and he stuck to it for as long as he was on the pitch and although he didn't score must have won them at least 4 or 5 corners which won't have gone unnoticed
Greece playing 11 men behind the ball is exactly the reason you want to see him trying to get behind the back 4 not an excuse to not try it as much, I'm not saying he was awful but felt he could have done more in that aspect
But for the next game I think it's a gimme Gomez and Mullet return and the 3rdspot is dependant on what Low think the oppositions weakness is...although of it is England wouldn't be surprised of he picks Podolski regardless due to the way the front 4 tore England apart in the WC

There was no room behind the back line for him to go. They were sitting at the top of their 18 the entire game. Any run he would have made would have been pointless. They only pulled Greece off of their 18 like twice and one of those was when Reus got behind.

He's also more likely to check back to play the through ball than to be the recepient. Schurrle is the guy who was taking Poldi's spot and he's the guy who spends half his time as a striker.

The whole reason Klose played was because Jogi was going to try to pull them off of their 18 but Greece wouldn't even commit men forward when they had the ball around penalty area. There was absolutely no room for anyone to make runs behind Greece's defense. Impossible.
