US Soccer puts out a decent video series called behind the crest. This episode is interesting because it shows how Gregg interacts with the players as well as giving us a good idea of the type of mentality he is trying to instill into the team. Practices are very organized and players know what's expected of them. He also stresses people knowing their roles and knowing exactly what to expect before walking out onto the pitch for a game. I like what I see so far, and it looks like GGG is getting buy in from the players.

For an article that kind of breaks down what Berhalter did with the Crew and how a modified system might be used for the US, see here:

Then we're already getting the best management we've had since Bradley left.

Hope he does well. The team hasn't seemed to play with real passion since 2002 IMO. I hope he can bring that back and figure out how to work in the young players with the vets.

Are you two trying to tell me that "express yourself" and "impose your will" aren't good enough when it comes to player roles and tactical advice?!?!

I thought they gave it a good go in '12. Ran up against a Super German squad in group stage, and then immediately into a Belgium side that had way more talent than anyone truly recognized at the time.

I thought they fought hard in 12, but it ultimately wasn't a very good team (especially after Jozy went down) and was poorly managed and was largely a disappointing tournament.

Another video from camp. Apparently Gregg banned cellphones at meals and the guys started doing crossword puzzles and getting competitive with it

Also it looks like he’s working with a 4-3-3 on some of the boards and is teaching the guys about how he wants forwards to press.

A good number of formations listed in that article.

Which one do you think we will land on?

I think it will depend on our opponent and our own personnel.

I like that he is coming in with a baseline style of play regardless of formation. I think over the next 4 years, our youth will have developed into a group that is able to go into and out of formations at will, and play effectively. I hate the idea of being stuck in a baseline formation with no in-game adjustment.

How was it disappointing that we made it out of the group of death at the expense Cristiano Ronaldo in a good Portugal team and a solid Ghana team?

Because we played like shite for all but 65' over 4 games.

Had no plan B after Jozy got hurt 20' into game 1. Ghana had their worst WC team since they didn't qualify in 2002, and they outplayed us. We were very lucky to walk out with a win.

The one game we SHOULD have won, we drew. We outplayed an injured Ronaldo led Portugal but gave up a goal in the last minutes.

Germany completely ran us off the field from the opening whistle.

Howard still probably has bruises from all the saves he had to make against Belgium. We could barely string 3 passes together.

I don't know how anyone could watch those 4 games and think that we played well.

Given the lack of depth at striker, and the obvious nature of the fallback plan being Clint in the case that Jozy is hurt, I think our guys played VERY well.

Germany outclassed everyone that tournament, we outplayed Ronaldo's Portugal for vast swaths, and it took one of the better passes in a desperate moment I have ever seen from Ronaldo to harvest a point off of us.

Belgium ran us off the field, but we still kept the scoreline close. That Belgian squad was ridiculously talented and underrated.

That was not a good Portugal team, especially with an injured Ronaldo.

It was hailed as a group of death, but the only team that played well at all was Germany. Us, Portugal, and Ghana were extremely mediocre.

2010 was pretty passionate.
