Venezuela made it to the finals 2 years ago. Sounds like bizarro world.

In 2015, the final four teams were Serbia, Mali, Senegal and Brazil with Serbia winning the whole thing.
And we lost to Serbia in the quarterfinals in a shootout.

How many of these guys make next USMNT WC team?

For me (*this is at some point not necessarily 2022):

Definites: Richards, Dest, Weah and Gloster

Highly possible: Pomykal*, Ledezma*, Llanez*, Mendez* and Konrad*

So strictly speaking 2022 I think only Richards, Dest, Weah and Gloster.

Pomykal will likely play with the U23s next, but after that, he'll definitely be called up to the USMNT. Right now, our depth options at the 10 are Pulisic, Mihailovic, Lletget, and Roldan? Paxton will almost surely pass Lletget and Roldan very soon. I think he's already better than Mihailovic. I think Paxton will soon be good enough to where we can afford to play Pulisic on the wing (where he seems to be more comfortable).

I think Soto is close to getting a USMNT cap as well. We are extremely thin at striker. I don't think he has the ceiling that Sargent has, but I think his floor is above Bobby Wood at his best.

I think this says something about Pomykal: In the 9 games before he got hurt/international duty, Dallas won 5 games and drew 2. In the 6 games that he's been out, Dallas has 1 win and 1 draw. I would be surprised if he doesn't move to Europe after this season.

Looks like both Soto and Gloster are looking to leave Hannover.

I like Pomykal a lot I am just tempering expectations on these predictions. Also to me doesn't he project more as a McKennie in the 8 than in Pulisic's 10 spot. To me Ledezma is the more natural 10 of the future

Agree with all of that. Back to my tempering expectations, I do this most with strikers. Would love to see Soto land somewhere in 2 Bundesliga next season and get some minutes

I think he's a pure #10. Ledezma and Pomykal are fairly similar. I think Pomykal has a slight edge right now, but that could mostly be due to Pomykal's professional experience.

I’ll never forget this one. Sitting in my living room at like 3am trying not to scream as it went to what felt like a hundred penalties

Can someone explain how some of these non-soccer power countries always seem to have teams go deep into the youth tournaments but then their senior team never does anything?

I think a lot of them tend to play together a lot. So while they may be just decent players skill-wise, they become a really tight team.

Pomykal is such a two way player. He is basically an 8 who sometimes poses as a 10.

In Serbia’s case I would assume that they are lumped in with Europe and while they have tight nit youth squads, the grind of qualifying in Europe is insane especially if you get a rough draw.
ETA
Looking at it they actually qualified for the World Cup in 2018 and lost close matches to Brazil and Switzerland. They did win their European World Cup qualifying group though.

I would think that Some of them playing together for a while and on the same club teams in those countries.

Meanwhile the best 20 year olds at the world powers are all around Europe.
And in the cases of some of the elite ones they are already playing for the senior team

I found the thread from that game in 2015, it's a helluva read

I forgot how insane Steffen was in that shootout

And that will probably be the end of Mali's tournament. Early own goal and now a red card in the 22'.
