Rio's career justifies his price tag
I dont disagree, but it doesn't change the fact that they probably overpaid for him in the day.. Sterling could turn out to be the second coming, and end up justifying his price tag... but I would still argue they overpaid..
edit: I'm not sure any defender is worth £50mm... Hell, Silva went for what Rio did 10+ years later..

I was partly kidding, but seems like he and Pepe changed jerseys at times in the past couple of years

JT didn't pass Rio for the best English CB until about 2010/11. Rio was always the first choice English CB. Don't be dense.
That's why Terry was captain and when forced to choose between the two Rio was dropped like a bad habit.

Maybe if transfer prices went down but they continued to rise, so I find it difficult to say that anyone "overpaid" anymore except in the cases of massive busts. It's just a hyper inflated market and will continue to be. You could certainly argue that Rio's transfer was prescient of that inflation, but looking at Rio's career, I don't think any Man U fan would say they would have rather not spent the money.
And I think Rio's price tag was inflated by Leeds's need to recoup their investment of 18 mil, otherwise the price of Rio might have been more "reasonable."

There is some selective memory here. Rio was a better ball-playing CB than Terry and in the early noughties was by far the better of the two. It was only later that Terry caught up and in some seasons surpassed him. At 20 or so Rio lead a team to a CL semi-final and was captain. Terry is and was a great CB, but acting as if Rio wasn't in the top three CB's in the league during his prime is lunacy. For me Rio's ball-playing skills always put him above Terry, though JT developed more as a passer later in his career. Ball playing CB's of Rio's size and athleticism are among the rarest of players, and Rio's career justifies his price tag. If anything a player like Rio would go upwards of 50 million today, and actually deserve it.
Crazy once again class
This is exactly why I asked Randy if he watched in the 2000's.

The form of both Terry and Rio in 2010/2011 was not very good.

So you started watching in like 2011?

overpaid is probably a bad term, but his price was def over inflated relative to what the other top CBs in world football were going for...
I believe if he was from say, Portugal... he would have been cheaper. Whether it was because of Leeds specific situation or because he was English and a known commodity in the EPL... not sure.
I just think the statement was funny coming from him, it was never about his ability... I hope Joe Gomez is the "next Rio Ferdinand" as many have been saying..
edit: and at their peaks, Rio over JT any day..

Probably. The same player from Portugal would still command a pretty hefty price tag, relative to other CB's.

I'm just busting balls.
Rio and Terry are/were both awesome. Terry is better in the air, reads the game better, more durable, scores tons more goals, and is a better leader and Rio is more athletic and like you said probably better at defending one on one. Rio would have def been better on the continent but I give Terry the edge as an English CB.
Either way paying that much for a CB that long ago was pretty crazy and only happened because Rio was English. It's exactly what he is criticizing now.

no doubt, but the root of his comment was around the cost of english players... never his/their ability... and he's correct!

In that era, England seemed to produce quite a few very good CBs... Not so much anymore... Now Cahill starts for their NT...
Stones maybe the one with the most promise?

The pool of English players is the weakest in a long time. England just had a golden generation and it's amazing that they didn't do more. The way Hodgson has set up the team is for it to be boring and reactive. Terrible coach.

Manchester United have responded to Real Madrid’s bid for David de Gea by telling the Spanish club they want to sign Sergio Ramos, according to the Guardian.
The 29-year-old, who has 128 caps for Spain, has an official buyout clause of 180m euros (£128m) but his contract at the Bernabeu expires in July 2017 and United are believed to think they have a chance of signing Ramos without having to meet that figure.
Looks like ol Ed is trolling Madrid

Pepe will lose it periodically, but typically, he spends more time diving and rolling around than he does kicking people
Sergio is absolutely batshit, and it bleeds into everything he does on the field

So, I guess my next question is with Kondogbia and possibly Imbula (which is odd, since they are both DMs).. Are they shipping out Kovacic? We've been linked with him all summer, with a deal imminent for quite some time.. depending on who you believe..
Yeah, they are both DMs. Signing Kondogbia may have been more to troll Milan, although he's obviously good.

Río Ferdinand, like the Serb who used to play for Manu, was overrated.
He did get abused when playing top continental sides (like Vidic).
