Mind if I hop in? First year following the soccer board but I'm a huge Liverpool and EPL fan.

I'd like to play again. I was in the Finns league last year and I thought I kept up with it pretty well until, as others mentioned, it fell apart. The watch list thing is definitely the way to go this year. So I assume everybody will be responsible for posting lineups and their teams score each week, correct? What's the plan for managing rosters?

For rosters we did a draft then weekly drop/adds first come first served (8am weds thru 12midnight Friday) you post you transaction in the master thread.

Doing drop/adds in reverse order of standings would be great but I think we tried it and it sucked

Col Reb - keep up with thread... Waiting to hear from last year owners then will see how many spots are open. If we do 2 leagues we should be able to accommodate everyone

Thanks

Last year, WSE came up with the idea of creating our own fantasy league. We ran with it and formed two leagues. The Championship ended being a very well run with mostly strong owners.

I wrote this at different times and inserted sections sometimes out of order, so it may not read too well. Apologies in advance.

Basics:

This is a ten team league that is designed just like fantasy football. We have a slow draft on the board that ends up taking a few days to do, but it is fun. The draft is a snake that is determined by random order. This is a points based league where you have weekly opponents and the higher score gets a win.

Rosters:

Each team has 15 players on their roster, and I am not sure how we restricted the number of players at each position. I believe it was to have a minimum of two keepers and three defenders, midfielders, and forwards. All players are lumped into those four positions. You start any reasonable formation (sorry Del Bosque, the 4-6-0 is not acceptable for our league) with your players. You can start 1 GK, 3-5 DEF, 3-5 MID, 1-3 FWD that adds up to 11 total. A 3-4-3 tended to be a good fantasy formation, in my opinion.

Formations:

You can also list one of your bench players as a sub. If a player does not play, then you can your sub to get his points. However, the sub has to maintain a reasonable formation. For example, if you are playing a 4-3-3 and your sub is a striker, but the starter who sat was a MID is not acceptable because that would give you an illegal lineup.

Transfers:

Transfers are a free for all on Wednesday mornings at 8 am Central. This was discussed long and hard last season, and this was the only logical way to handle it. You can only have a max of 15 players (16 after the supplemental draft) at any time. Post in the league thread who you are adding and dropping. Spelling names exactly as they appear on the site and including the club helps, especially if you are adding some random player from Crystal Palace or a dude with a difficult last name. Checking free agency is done by looking at the transactions tab and generally using control + f.

Also, weekly free agency times and date are subject to change if the game week schedule is abnormal. Our free agency assumes games from Saturday to Monday. Any change will be notified in advance.

Scoring:

We use the same scoring as the fantasy EPL site, which makes everything so much easier. You can check the full scoring on the site I will link, but it is four points for a goal by a forward, five for a goal by a midfielder, and six for a goal by a defender. Assists are worth three. Midfield clean sheets are worth one. Defender clean sheets are worth four. The player gets one point for 1-60 minutes played and two points for 60+ minutes played. I do not know the goalie scoring. Bonuses are awarded by the EPL fantasy site (1, 2, and 3 points) to the top performers of the winning side.

Each side has a captain, vice captain, and sub. Make sure you notify each player's name when posting your weekly roster. The captain's points are doubled. If the captain does not play, then the vice captain's points are doubled.

EPL Fantasy Site:

LINK

You probably need to make an account to view the website. It is free. Also, I would recommend scouring through the site to see what players scored the most points last year and check out how they price their players. Player prices could serve as a bit of a draft cheat, but be wary of blind reliance on that.

Watch List:

When the season is underway, you can load your players on to the watch list. This is done by clicking the info box next to a player's name and then clicking "add to watch list" in the top right corner. Then, go to the transfers tab, set the filters to "view - watch list" and "sorted by - round score." This is how you calculate each individual player's score. Simply add up the numbers of your starters. Make sure you wait until all the games for the week are played because bonuses are not awarded until the end of the week sometimes.

Supplemental Draft:

After the summer transfer window closes on September 2nd (I believe the day changed this year), we have a one-round draft in reverse order of the league draft to add players who entered the player pool after our slow draft. Any player who entered the league from anywhere outside the EPL after the start of our draft cannot be drafted until the supplemental draft.

The winter transfer window works differently. I think the players just enter the free agency pool and can be picked up Wednesday morning at 8:00 AM CST. We will worry about this later.

Managing our own League:

The coolest part of this league is that we keep track of everything. We will have a league thread that include an OP with all the necessary information. I am thinking of a Google Excel doc that has tabs for the league table, schedule, past results, transactions, etc. Also, the OP would include a link to the EPL site and anything else relevant.

Each player is responsible for calculating his or her (but not really her because there are no girls on the Internet) score each as well as posting a weekly roster.

Sample roster scoring:

Team Landycakes Week 1 score

GK Tim Howard (Everton) - 2

DEF Geoff Cameron (Stoke City) - 6
DEF Phil Jones (Man United) - 2
DEF Leighton Baines (Everton) - 8 *Vice-Captain*
DEF David Luiz (Chelsea) - DNP

MID Theo Walcott (Arsenal) - 3
MID Clint Dempsey (Tottenham) - 10
MID Lucas (Liverpool) - 1

FWD Christian Benteke (Aston Villa) - 2 x 2 = 4 *Captain*
FWD Peter Crouch (Stoke City) - DNP
FWD Pappiss Cisse (Newcastle) - 4

Bench:

GK Simon Mignolet (Liverpool) - 2
DEF Patrice Evra (Man United) - INJ
MID Adam Johnson (Sunderland) - 3
MID Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) - 1
FWD Shane Long (West Brom) - 1 *Sub*

Total: 41 points

Shane Long's point as a sub counted because he slid into an eligible formation. This team played a man down and unfortunately that happens a decent amount. 41 points is probably an average score. 50+ tends to win you the game more often than not. Unless you were Mick and I because we were supremely unlucky last year.

Conclusion:

I think that is all about all I can think for now. I am sure I am missing stuff, and I will probably amend this post with extra sections or something.

Returning members or new members, feel free to add anything or ask for clarifications.

Looks very similar to a couple I do online through like ESPN in terms of points, but that's based off a salary, not a draft.

Looks like a ton of fun though, hopefully I'll be able to get a spot

I would be interested in a spot if it opens up in the second league.

Vicks

We could consider a tweak to the sub rules this year to match the premier site. (I think) there is a sub designated for each position (def, mid, strk). So we dont have as many zeros as we did last year.

Works for me. Want to make it three subs (like in real soccer) as long as it remains an eligible formation?

Can you make a waiting list of the new players as well so we don't drop names in the thread?

I'll join again, I lapsed for a couple weeks last season but stayed until the end.

Are we still doing the thing where we take the 5 legit people who played all year from each league and make one 10 team league.?

Maybe not. Atom was really busy with architecture school or something.

Returning members will be in the first league.

I believe so...

Also, the 2nd league if someone wants to spearhead it, they can run it on a website and see how it goes...

I stayed with it last season. I'll do it again if I'm not expected to calculate everyone else's scores again like GC did.

Everyone should just do their own. It is pretty easy that way. We just need to determine league members, randomize the draft order, and set a slow draft start for two weeks before the start of the EPL season.

We will have a separate thread for the draft and then another season long thread with the detailed op.
