North End Zone Jumbotron Issues
Posted by Bmath on 11/7/22 at 10:46 am
The Jumbotron on Saturday was glitchy. The screens around the main video board shut off several times during the game. The right side is the score board, and the left is typically adds.
What was interesting is how much dimmer the stadium felt when the two side panels were off.
I know that LSU is $500k in the hole, but hopefully this board will be upgraded soon.
Call Entergy About Outage Map Errors
Posted by Bmath on 2/16/21 at 9:39 am
This is a PSA for Soy Boys of the OT and baws with a wife and kids nagging them constantly about the cold:
Our power went out yesterday before 7 am. Entergy outage map showed our neighborhood having power. I called later in the day and used the automated system to try and report the outage. Did this several more times throughout the day.
This morning our map still showed our neighborhood having power so I called again and tried the power emergency option. This got me to a person who said that it showed a down limb had been removed and the power was restored. She was able to get our outage reported.
The rep also told me there have been lots of calls reporting outages in areas that their system showed as normal. If you need to call Entergy, select Option 5 to speak to a person.

He ended his day with 103 rushing yards on 20 carries, 77 receiving yards on nine catches, and one kick return for 19 yards.
Recovering a hijacked Google Account
Posted by Bmath on 7/8/19 at 11:24 am
My phone and wallet were stolen a few weeks back. The people who did this have been quite sophisticated and broken multiple layers of security. At this point I have been able to shore things up and put blocks to prevent further identity theft issues.
Unfortunately, they were able to hijack my Google account and change all recovery information. At this point I really don't care about the email address, but I do have tax information in Google Drive.
I have followed the instructions on the Google account recovery page and tried to do everything they suggest multiple times. At this point I wish I could at least get the account completely frozen.
Has anyone on here had success recovering a fully hijacked account?

Website loading and link issues on mobile
Posted by Bmath on 7/5/19 at 12:31 pm
Mobile site not loading properly on my phone. Scrolling often leads to a blank screen. Clicking links to new threads or other boards often does nothing. The site will even appear to completely freeze.
My iPhone 8 was stolen about two weeks ago and I replaced it with an iPhone XR (MT3K2LL/A). These issues were not present on my old phone, but are consistently happening on the new phone.
Currently using Safari and running iOS 12.3.1

Shopping for Quality Products on Amazon is Getting Harder
Posted by Bmath on 2/22/18 at 11:47 am
Lately Amazon has become more difficult to trust when shopping for unfamiliar brands. Something as simple as a phone cable can have listings from dozens of sellers. They often have unique branding but otherwise look nearly identical in the photos and product descriptions.
Some photos show what appears to be an Amazon approved symbol in the photo, making you feel that the product is legit. Also, many products now have a confusing “Amazon Choice” label which really is related to ordering through Alexa and not actual product reviews.
The review process is also getting worse, as some new companies offer full reimbursement promotions if you leave them 5 star reviews. Not to mention one star ratings based on a shipping error and not the actual product.
Amazon Prime continues to be a great value, but I find myself having to spend more and more time discerning over competitively priced products that shouldn’t take a lot of mental effort to buy.

131Abs are straining during deadlifts
Posted by Bmath on 8/2/17 at 12:53 pm
The past two weeks I have been getting a tightness in my central abs during deadlifts. It goes from my rib cage down to my waist. Almost as if everything is being pulled along the midline.
I've been cutting weight for several months now, and so I haven't been going super heavy on my sets.
Are my abs weak, or should I consider a weight belt? I've thrown in extra ab work to hopefully remedy this.
Update: Decided to focus on ab strength first. I've been using the ab roller and hanging leg raises the past few weeks.
Yesterday I decided to try a narrower grip because I was grabbing the bar at the rings. Not only was the ab strain nearly gone, but the lift was MUCH easier. I have no idea why I had been gripping so wide all these years.

Is AT&T U-verse Throttling Speeds During Upload?
Posted by Bmath on 7/7/17 at 3:28 pm
A few weeks ago I switched from Cox to AT&T U-verse after a salesman stopped by to talk about the new fiber optic network in my neighborhood.
Less than 24 hours after install I noticed that my speeds were tanking bad enough to effect streaming quality on my TV (Picture quality and or buffering). Over the past few weeks, I frequently noticed that I'll only be getting 3-4 Mbps. Speeds even have crawled to <1 Mbps over both Wifi and LAN connection. I've gone into the Gateway and switched to various recommended settings including a Wifi rescan to find a better frequency.
While the slowdowns frequently happen when I'm only using one device, the biggest culprit is when I'm on my laptop. My suspicion based on my own observations and a bit of research is that when my Photos App is uploading pictures to iCloud that AT&T may be throttling the speeds.
First, one of AT&T's biggest selling points was that fiber optic internet is supposed to have consistent speeds compared to cable which gets especially spotty during peak usage times. Second, I'm pretty disappointed if they are actually throttling my speed when uploading.
Is this normal? Are there any easy workarounds? Should I just cut bait since my contract is <30 days old?

Best Deal on a MacBook Pro?

$1799 for one of the remaining Mid 2015 editions of the 15 inch MacBook Pro.
- 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (Crystalwell)
- 16GB of Onboard 1600 MHz DDR3L RAM
- 256GB PCIe-Based Flash Storage
- Integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics
The base trim for the new release 15 inch models retails for $450 more with similar stats using upgraded components.
I've been milking my late 2008 model 13 inch MacBook with a RAM and SSD upgrade, but battery issues aside the processor just won't keep up anymore when photo editing. Another 13 in could be an option, but it may not be that much cheaper to get the memory and storage I want.
I'd like to stay with a Mac as I prefer to natively use Linux for bioinformatics work, and am also fond of Pixelmator and the Photos App.

Star Wars 8 Plot Rumor

Luke Is Going After Snoke
quote:
New rumors from Star Wars: The Last Jedi concern the tools Luke Skywalker has with him on the planet Ahch-To, as well as what his mission towards the end of the film is. Ever since Mark Hamill appeared in what amounted to a wordless cameo in the final scene of The Force Awakens, fans have been eager to see the original trilogy protagonist in action during these new sequels. Fortunately, Luke is going to be a major part of Episode VIII and factors heavily into the story. However, the character has changed greatly since he was celebrating with Ewoks on Endor in Return of the Jedi, and Luke has a much different outlook on life. In the Last Jedi trailer, he said it was time for the Order to end – a statement that sent viewers into a frenzy.

The annual “LSU Student Day” at football practice gives LSU students an opportunity to tour the team’s gameday locker room in Tiger Stadium along with entering the Tiger Stadium the way the players do on a Saturday Night in Death Valley - through the chute with a touch of the “Win” bar as they exit the locker room.
The Tigers are scheduled to practice in shorts and helmets on Thursday from 4 p.m. until approximately 5:30. Once the Tigers are done with their practice, LSU students will get a chance to take the field in Tiger Stadium to participate in a Punt, Pass and Kick competition.

Flooring Contractor in BR
Posted by Bmath on 4/6/17 at 8:39 am
Getting the nursery ready for our new baby, we noticed a bubble in the middle of the wood flooring. As we walked around it shifted to a far wall.
Floors are Morning Star bamboo which were installed 3-4 years ago by the previous homeowners. Therefore they have no install guarantee.
It could be moisture but there is no odor or other signs of water damage. Faulty glue or just a bad install?
We do have an extra box of planks that could be used for a small repair.
Any recommendations on flooring specialists in BR? Home Advisor recommends Hunter Ventures.
ETA: Per the advice of the Rant I contacted Les Miles. He had a want to do quality work, but I wasn't keen on his idea of putting in fescue.

Selling a car that needs repairs "As Is"
Posted by Bmath on 12/8/16 at 9:41 am
The clutch on my 2007 Civic Si began to die this week. Second one in <100,000 miles, and the total repair is going to cost $2k because they have to replace the flywheel. On top of that, it has paint issues from a faulty paint job on a recall and interior wear.
My aunt is giving me a great deal on a 4-year-old Rav4 with relatively low miles. Therefore I'm not looking to trade in the vehicle.
Would a dealership still be willing to buy it without using it as a trade in? Could I even try and sell it out on the street or on Craig's list considering it doesn't drive very well without the repair?

14 dead in NC from Flooding in the wake of Hurricane Matthew

This makes you wonder how many more people could have died during the floods this summer if so many locals didn't have boats to help each other.

"Too many people have died," McCrory said. "Be careful — do not put other people's lives in danger."
More than 1,500 people were stranded Monday in Lumberton by flooding. Helicopter crews plucked people from rooftops and rescue boats helped the stranded find safety. Rescues were expected to continue Tuesday, AP reports.
Initially, the governor said the flooding in Lumberton was heightened by a suspected levee breach. However, the National Weather Service said later in the day that there had been no breach.
According to government officials, North Carolina has had more than 2,000 water rescues. Some 200 people were rescued from a flooded neighborhood in the Edgecombe County town of Pinetops. Another 70 were rescued from two hotels in Brunswick County, according to AP.
“North Carolina is resilient, our people are strong and we are going to get through this together,” McCrory said. “This storm is still impacting people in a big way. You have got to see it to believe all the devastation that has occurred.”
