WSJ: china's chip ambitions run into a global tech wall

Huawei unveiled a new chip development concept called "Tau's Law," declaring the possibility of reaching cutting-edge chip production by 2031. However, experts believe this high-profile presentation rather confirms china's persistent technological lag behind global industry leaders.
Access to EUV technology remains a key challenge for China. Following the imposition of export restrictions by the US and its allies, the Dutch company ASML, the world's only manufacturer of such machines, is unable to supply them to Chinese companies.
Experts note that even if Huawei achieves its stated goals, its products will still lag behind global leaders by approximately six to eight years by 2031.
Low production efficiency remains an additional challenge. Experts estimate that only about 20% of the company's chips meet quality requirements.

That's all of "china's greatness"—the chinese paper dragon.
ASML is the world's only manufacturer of high-end circuit board machines.
There are also some in the US for the military industry. Even Samsung uses ASML machines.
It was a scandal when the chinese stole one of these machines from the Netherlands, assembled it in china, and it didn't work! As a result, the chinese spies-thieves were kicked out of the Netherlands! This also applies to aircraft engines, which china doesn't have at all.
