In a nutshell......
Trump winning the 2016 POTUS sent a message to the left that their policies sucked, and their candidate, Killary sucked.
Any time the "left" speaks out for their "beliefs", it's a thing of beauty, it's to help "the people", but any time the Right speaks out supporting their beliefs it's "racist/misogynist" and bad for "the people/America".
He, as always (99.8% of the time), hit the nail right on the head.

There will never be another person with his personality, his sense of humor, his logic, that can deliver a message as he did. He was truly one of a kind. The only other person I can think of that comes close, who had similar abilities, is Paul Harvey.......Good Day !

The evolution of talk radio history is interesting. Paul Harvey had a long time show with 15 minutes in mid-day and 5 minute updates now and then.
Daytime radio was totally dominated by music formats. Small town stations just gave you pop (top 40). Larger cities were able to specialize in CW, Soul, Hard Rock, etc.
The first guy to really try talk radio for a long show was Larry King. But he had to go to late night. Commercial ad sales were for daytime and people wanted music during the day while driving.
When I was a DJ on an AM station in 1969 my program director said 'Zach, someday there will be stations that play no music at all. Just talk.' I thought he was nuts.
Rush was the first guy who thought that political talk in long show format could work at mid-day when radio listening numbers were very high. He was right and lots of people started attempts at copying him. I always considered Neal Boortz and G. Gordon Liddy to be excellent. The rest were crap. Especially Shawn Hannity.

You definitely have a knowledge of radio, Am especially.
My family had a 50K watt AM powerhouse station in the 70's-80's. They made a very good living playing country music during that time, as well as MRN/NASCAR, and dad was an absolute perfectionist when it came to programming, exact air play time with not a single second of dead air-time any time, no excuses. They played the Paul Harvey segments every day, and back in that time-frame, the news came in via a teletype machine. If you were in radio back then, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Rush came into the picture at exactly the right time, and changed the entire thought process in regards to no music/all talk news radio. He set the bar, and no one will ever achieve what he did. I listened to Boortz, and G. Gordon, as well. G. Gordon used to always crack me up.....he couldn't own a firearm since he was a convicted felon, but as he always said....Mrs. Liddy owns a lot of firearms
Hannity reminds me of a little banty rooster, he makes a lot of noise, but that's about it, it doesn't mean anything ! I get tired of hearing about his "martial arts" at some point in every episode, kind of like Dan Bongino.....Dan is OK, but I get tired of hearing about his secret service/NYPD crap in EVERY episode !

OMG, does that bring back memories. You had to gather up reams of connected paper and rip the stories you want off the edge of a table.
I have used that skill all my life instead of using scissors. I can just rip a perfect line off any paper from a straight table counter.
