True story , my ten year old won his school spelling bee and competed in the regional saturday in lafayette. In the third or fourth round a black girl was actually given the word "uppity", i cringed and looked around. There were numerous people just looking down at the floor and shaking their heads ...

did she ask for it to be used in a sentence? did she get it right?

She actually missed it, used ds instead of ts

And i was very relieved to hear her not ask for it to be used in a sentence

White Privilege: Not having to hear people snicker in the audience when you get the word "uppity" in a spelling bee.
Check it.
Check it.

Did any black people in the audience get uppity when she got it wrong?

It is a legit word found in English dictionaries right? Why would it be precluded from use in a spelling bee?
BTW, did you really cringe?

I'm white and my kid is about to turn 13. Child gets uppity with me and mom all the time. We call her uppity sometimes.
What's next: cringe at the word "stupid?"

Some of those darkies are just "uppity".

Yall really want to question me for cringing when i heard it?? You are probably the type that would make a big deal out of it when it happened and scream racism ..... I just thought it was funny

And yes it's a legit word found in the dictionary, so are watermelon and slave.... Dont you think it would be funny and cringe worthy if a black student was given those words in a spelling bee.......?

I really believe we've become a nation of overly sensitive wimps. I'm not calling you a wimp my friend but when we start cringing at the sound of syllables forming a word then we've probably taken the sensitivity thing a bit too far.

NO, I wouldn't. I'm Irish and I can spell potato and hangover without blush.

Look im in agreement with you, i cringed because i knew how some people would react, not because it bothered me...... Its like when you hear an inappropriate joke in public and you look around to see who heard it, nothing more
