People here bash California. But California has the 4th largest economy in the world. They send more money to the federal government than they get back. Unlike most southern and red states who live off of the tits of the federal government.
I feel like this is cherry picking data or some made up bullshite.
Does this include the oil and gas revenue that goes to the federal government from offshore and onshore southern states and/or red states?

quote:Born and raised in Santa Clara County. It really was a fantastic place to grow up. The situation is depressing to me. My family had been in that area since the 1860's. All are gone now. Everyone I went to school with... gone. Every family on my old street... gone.
“Santa Clara County now has the highest low-income threshold for a single-person household at $111,700. The amount is a $33,150 increase since 2020.”
I last visited in 2022 and it might be the last time I'll ever go back.
I grew up in a 'working class' neighborhood in Palo Alto (when such a thing was even conceivable) in this 2 bedroom, 900 sq ft house. You can't see in the picture but there's busy railroad tracks that shake the house a few times an hour running directly behind.
Last sold in 2020 for $2,5MM.

Don't fall into that trap tgrgrd00.
California is massive, has the longest Pacific coast line in the 48, LA/LB is the busiest ocean port by TEU volume in the country and some of the most fertile farm land in the world. Word is that in 2025 their contribution to the US will be a net negative. Talk about a massive failure on all municipal, local and state levels.

In other words, you could be making well over $100K on your own, and still be officially considered “low income.”
Imagine the abject poverty that service, retail, etc industry workers and the unemployed must be living in among those areas.

The state is still beautiful but there is a lot of weirdness here.
Some of these trends can’t be helped. Low income in Santa Clara County was $80k when I worked there in ten years ago. Google interns were making $7k a month so rental prices were market driven. Something happened to the American housing market during Covid. Prices went up everywhere. California is just on the leading edge of that change.
