The real question is what the real purpose of this seizure may be. Is it just to seize the oil? We really are in uncharted territory…

Uncharted territory?
Why Ships Are Seized
-Sanctions Violations: Preventing oil or goods transfer for sanctioned nations (Iran, Venezuela) or groups.
-Illicit Trafficking: Stopping arms smuggling or other illegal activities.
-Wartime Actions: Capturing enemy vessels or assets.
Here is two other ones and you can find a lot more.
In March and April 2007, the U.S. Coast Guard made a record-setting seizure of approximately 38,000 to 43,000 pounds of cocaine from a single ship, the Panamanian-flagged motor vessel Gatun, off the coast of Panama. This was part of a major anti-drug operation. Included DEA and DHS in this operations
LINK
The 2020 Iranian tanker seizure refers to the U.S. Department of Justice's largest-ever confiscation of Iranian fuel (1.1 million barrels) from four tankers—Bella, Bering, Pandi, Luna—headed to Venezuela in August 2020, disrupting an IRGC operation. This followed by just a day an incident where Iranian forces briefly seized the tanker Wila in the Gulf of Oman, reportedly searching for that same seized cargo, highlighting escalating tensions and a tit-for-tat in maritime seizures between Iran and the U.S. over sanction evasion.
