It's a legitimate question. The Supreme Court would almost certainly declare secession as unconstitutional. So the U.S. wouldn't allow it.

I don't think you typically ask permission to secede, it's just something you do.

As I tried to explain earlier, this isn't some clear cut, black and white process. The idea of secession is probably a multi-generatuon process, and would theoretically start with smaller communities or states simply not recognizing what they perceive to be an over reaching centralized government.

There is a lot of nuance to this. Don't oversimplify it. If you study the American Revolution or the American Civil War, or other countries that balkanized, you will see this process is not done over night. But at some point it started with the simple question "why are we still united?" And then "is it time to divorce?"
