Why do you think soccer fans are overwhelmingly liberal?

Never been a soccer guy but just in my professional career it seems like every soccer fan I have met is your stereotypical liberal. They look like a soy drinking Pajama Boy hipster type, they epsouse left wing views, and just don't tend to be masculine.
The biggest soccer fan at my office is all about soccer. He says its the only sport he follows. He still has a Bernie 2016 sticker on his Subaru and when we went out for lunch at work he was going on a crusade about how restaurants in America need to go to the european model where there is no tipping. He also looks like your typical liberal, with the thick black framed glasses, unkempt neckbeard and skinny fat appearance.
My brother in law's parents are also huge soccer fans and also big liberals. Everytime I go over there to visit my sister and nephews his dad is watching some European soccer game. They were huge Beto supporters.
I've been to one soccer game in my life, a Houston Dynamo game and the crowd was indistinguishable from an Alexandra Ocasio Cortez rally.

Currently in San Diego. It's left wing here, but not LA or SF levels of leftist.
But I also worked with a guy when I lived in New Orleans who was the same way. Die hard leftist, big soccer fan. Made a point to say he was going to wake up at 6am on a college football saturday to watch soccer and emphasized the fact he would watch zero college football but soccer all day.

Above average American soccer fan (watch Premier league and UEFA regularly) and you are 100% right. There is a countercultural element in play which is why hipsters (which are liberal) gravitate toward watching the sport and supporting a team.

My theory is that since its a sport really popular in Europe, and most liberals want to emulate everything Europe, and are madly in love with European culture, they gravitate toward it.
It also doubles as a virtue signaling rejection of American sports, which the effiminate liberal male views as too masculine, too conservative, too barbaric. Soccer is much more sophisticated to them, where their elitism comes into play.
Generally the same ones who say "we need to be more like Europe" on any political issue

USMNT wore rainbow jerseys a couple years back as well so the heads of the organization could virtue signal about what was a fairly contentious political issue only a few years ago, prior to Obergefell.

Soccer at its highest level is pretty fun to watch if you invest a little time into it. It's less about sheer athleticism and more about skill/situational intelligence vs other sports, which to me is more fun to watch and appreciate. Plus no commercials. NBA in its current form is shockingly boring to me and the NFL has a serious officiating problem. College football has gotten out of control and is probably past its peak, and college basketball and baseball are unwatchable. All that said, American soccer fans are still pretty horrible to be around.
