I have not been to a bar since the 1990's, but surely they haven't changed much. I would guess the pretentious comment was not about the book itself, but that someone would go to a place known for social mingling and pretend to read a book. Bars I frequented were much too loud to seriously read in. The fact that someone would try to read any book in one is something I personally have never seen. Maybe during the quiet daytime hours, but not the times I frequented them.

I’m not going to argue with someone low brow enough to make a thread called “White hippie nose ring next to me at the bar was reading a "Handmaid's Tale.’” If this conversation appeals to you, your IQ indicates you do not have the critical thinking skills required for meaningful discussion on this topic or in general.

Someone with an ounce of intelligence or interest in meaningful discussion that may scoff at her choice of book could say something like “Why does this book appeal to women?”


I’m also not the first person to hop into a thread and respond to one of the replies instead of the OP, but for you I guess I struck a nerve. You may want to dig deeper on why.
