It promotes a hive mind and an us. vs them mentality. It is counter-productive to any kind of discussion, really. It works for the "I'm right and you're wrong" crowd, but it doesn't(or shouldn't) work for adults. I think you're confusing nationalism with being proud to be an American. One is great and one is silly.
