I basically use the two terms interchangeably, but I'm hearing "Marxist" and "Marxism" much more often now.

I would imagine the differences are mostly subtle and rather insignificant.

Marxism is theory.

Communism is practice.

No, Mr. Bringiere, I am not a Communist but I am a Marxist-Leninist.

You are not a Communist, but you are a Marxist-Leninist? What's the difference?

Marxism is one of many "schools of thought" within Communism, and generally considered the original "granddaddy" of them. Stalinism, Maoism, etc.

They don't vary much, and are all pretty evil ways of running a society.

Marx was actually an anarchist, or anarchical communist. He didn’t believe in large governments based on many writings, more bioregionalism. Communism was his social theory that attempted to build a framework for larger groups or society as a whole. Haven’t read his stuff in 20+ years, that’s how i interpret your statement.

According to C. Wright Mills who was in the middle of the revisionist marxist infestation of Columbia University during his professorship there, in his book, The Marxists, he explains that Marxism is the philosophy.

Communism (Leninist-Marxism) which is the "ideology," i,e. the philosophy practically applied as a real system.

Marx was not preoccupied with how to spread his system. He convinced himself that it would be embraced enthusiastically by the downtrodden proletariat.

Lenin and Trotsky showed how it could be spread worldwide.

Originally and more often than not at the point of a gun.

Marxism: ideology of Class warfare sold as utopia.
Communism: reality where everyone but the oligarchs die or are more miserable than before.
