re: Was Gay Marriage a Slippery Slope?

Gay marriage doesn’t need to be accepted just tolerated. It’s all about money anyway. They claim to not believe in religion so why do they want something so bad that’s rooted in religion? No one was stopping them from living together, no one was hunting them down and tossing off roofs(in this country), etc. They want the ECONOMIC benefits of marriage.

Also, what about deaths? My wife's father died when she was young. Was it "harmful to society" that her mother didn't remarry until my wife was an adult?
This is a really bad attempt at a “gotcha” question.

That's not necessarily true. There are many gay people who are religous just like there are alcoholics who are religous just because the religion they follow doesn't approve of one thing they do doesn't mean they can't follow said religion

Moreover, what about single parents? Sure, you'll argue that you want to make divorce harder, but unless you want to make it *impossible* you're going to have, however small, a portion of the children being raised by single parents.
Not a good argument either considering the impact being a single parent has on financial outlook.
1. Graduate high school
2. Don’t have kids before marriage
3. Don’t have a criminal record
Those 3 things aren’t exactly tough to do and dramatically improve someone’s chances to live a stable adult life.

Oh I know but if people really want a discussion they need to be willing to look at the pieces.

Yeah they're good suggestions but people make mistakes especially teenagers. Nobody is trying to glorify the life of a single parent
Posted on 11/1/19 at 9:58 pm to Hoops
Of course maybe the issue would be keep government involvement out of marriage completely remove all the benefits married couples received from getting married

He appears to be arguing that he can enforce secular morality and he's not a dick but if a majority enforces a moral value based on their religious beliefs
That's because for the longest time society has seen secular laws as "do what you want so long as 1.) no one is being harmed and 2.) all parties are consenting." Unfortunately, and this is where I depart from the progressives, they've recently moved far beyond that. Church or private school that doesn't have the same opinions we do? Time to shut you down! Baker or photographer who doesn't want to do gay weddings? Shut them down!
I disagree with the recent perversion of truly liberal (liberal as in focusing on personal liberty) stances. But you still see this idea parroted because historically, at least in so far as it being people's personal histories (previous 20-50 years here in America) that's usually how secular and religious policies broke down.

This was the entire justification of gay marriage via judicial fiat; the majority's views were just wrong and needed to be overturned by five people with the correct views.
While I agree that the implementation of gay marriage seemed to be more by judicial fiat than by proper legislative procedure, about the time it passed the majority flipped from opposition to support.

Oh, well, if you say so.

You could follow all of the above and still end up with a single parent, though. So back to my point...

Right but when people begin to make excuses for everything personal accountability is removed and exceptions begin to become the normal.

You're wrong.
^ That's essentially what you typed. It's an assertion. How can I argue against such a simple statement? How can you form a counterargument when the argument is simply stating you're wrong?
I fully recognize my limitations. You clearly do not.

Ok people abuse it how does that in anyway relate to gay parents adopting

I was commenting on how ridiculous the comparison was to make. If you didn’t intend it to be like that it still definitely came across that way.

quote:Mock all you like but God's "rules" aren't arbitrary. They're based on His very character, which is holy. Without God you have no objective basis for morality and all you're left with is preference.
Oh yet here's a news flash not everyone believes in some magical sky man who makes arbitrary rules on morality.
quote:Why a "dick"? What standard are you using to justify that allegation and why should I care?
Point is you can believe in all the bible claims but the moment you try to enforce it via the law you're a dick.
quote:I don't want a theocratic government. A theocracy involves government dictating religious doctrine and that's not the role of government, even in Christianity, at least not until Christ returns.
I sure as hell know you wouldn't want Muslims enforcing their beliefs on you so how about you take a step back and ask yourself if wanting a psuedo theocratic government is truly right
That said, no, I wouldn't want Muslims enforcing their beliefs on anyone. It's not because they are of a different religion but because their particular beliefs are destructive and false. Only the Christian worldview provides a coherent basis for things such as objective morality.

I’m sorry your wife’s father passed when she was young(genuinely) but something terrible and unforeseen occurring is no excuse for people not attempting to avoid being single parents.

I’d rather a kid be in a gay home than an orphanage or abusive home

Next time explain how its ridiculous instead of just stating it.

Agreed, but FooManChoo argued that you need both a man and a woman to raise a child, without both, to reference my question directly, its harmful to society. That general line of thought extends past gay couples, though, as they're not the only parents who raise children without a man and a woman. He would need to word that in such a way that excludes deaths and single parents and I'm not sure he can. If he can't, its not a critique of gay marriage specifically.

People don't need a God to tell them what's right and wrong. This idea that they should be easily debunked since every atheist isn't out there murdering people

The one where I don't let my personal beliefs dictate how other live

Kind of sounds like you want some version of it.

Again that is your opinion not an objective fact

Yeah he left the door open. I do think a father/mother home is ideal but everything doesn’t need to be perfect to work.
