I'd assume that for them to grab a GPS ID, the attendee would need to:

A) Have their cell phone with them and turned on. (OK, probably most attendees).

B) Have their GPS active.

I'd bet that a significant number would not have their GPS active. Pretty sure mine is inactive unless I've got my maps app, or Uber or something, in the foreground. Bottom line, you can't assume that 20,189 devices represents everyone that was there.

They need to address that.

Anyone can get the data if they pretend to be a marketing company and want to offer instant ads.

You can set parameters like within 0.5 miles of X location, type of device, etc.

I don't know the specifics but it is certainly possible.

But I have never seen him show his work or even claim this is his method so who knows.

I'd say 40% chance he is full of shite, 40% chance he is juking the stats, and 20% chance he is completely accurate.
