WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court returned to the issue of voting rights on Wednesday as the justices began hearing arguments over whether Ohio’s policy of purging infrequent voters from its registration rolls disenfranchises thousands of people and violates federal law.

quote:

States try to maintain accurate voter rolls by removing people who have died or moved away. Ohio is one of seven states, along with Georgia, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, that purge infrequent voters from registration lists, according to plaintiffs who sued Ohio in 2016.

quote:

They called Ohio’s policy the most aggressive. Registered voters in Ohio who do not vote for two years are sent registration confirmation notices. If they do not respond and do not vote over the following four years, they are purged.

Wow so draconian!

How is "infrequent" determined exactly?

Why do I have a feeling they had a bunch of people purged who lived at the same nonexistent address?

I seem to remember that being the case in Wisconsin when they started checking the rolls.

I would assume this.

Per the article, if you go two years without voting the process starts.

The process in total takes four years, meaning you have to go six years without voting.

Ok thanks. For some reason the article didn't pull up on my end when I clicked it.

Six years is a good amount of time that you should have to re-register to be put back on the rolls.

If you can't respond with a "I'm alive" in SIX years, you don't deserve to vote.

So it takes 6 years to purge someone from the records. Sounds like a typical government program, very efficient.

So the process takes 6 years?

Sorry. If you missed elections for 6 years, you are either dead or moved away.

It takes 6 years of silence to be "purged" and you still have the opportunity to re-register to vote after that? I don't see the problem here.
