Part the problem with your theory that trump is an elite so it can't be populist is that whether or not trump is rich is irrelevant. He's positioned himself against the deep state.

A populist feels their concerns aren’t being heard by a ruling class. Trump is part of that class. He isn’t being held down by anyone. He is being prosecuted by political rivals. If you can’t wrap your mind around that distinction, I can’t help you.

Idk why you feel a populist movement is defined by their figurehead alone and his ststus. It's defined by the campaign which as I cited is very clearly about combating the dep system and returning control to the American people...
