I think its a little premature to say other streams of revenue will drop significantly based on a 2 million fewer fans the first week of a boycott.

We're talking about the Sunday night game which saw 7.4 million less fans. That's significant. That's a fricking 1/3 of people who watched the opening Sunday night game last year.

You're talking about the opener on Thursday. When it's all said and done this week, and when all the game viewerships are combined, we're likely talking 30-40 million less eyeballs on the product overall at a minimum. That's HUGE for advertising.

You'd think that with COVID, people would be excited for a return to normalcy of any kind, including watching competitive sports.

Because competitive sports these days are not normal.

Those numbers don't include the West coast. LA was playing in the game. You need to add about 3-5 mil to account for that. That would bump from 15 mil (14.8) to about 18 mil- 20 mil. Thats why I said its only 2 mil off, an estimate of course.

Or stop trying to compare apples to oranges and wait for the final numbers to compare.

Yep.

It is awful risky to be turning on your TV's while in lockdown at home.

What I'm curious about is do you have to watch at home with your mask on

You must wear your mask only when you eat beans or chili.

Dallas is the most watched team consistently every year. Dallas on SNF on opening night during a pandemic without many other options and opening a new $5B stadium for the LA team with a little bit of a pulse would expect to draw 25M+ probably.

If it gets to 18M that’s still a huge drop. I think the big thing will be if the viewers are gone for good or not.

The NFL bet on a new stadium (even empty) while the west coast burns was going to be a winner, just dumb.

At the same time, the Bucs vs Saints was a 4 year high for a single Fox Game of the Week (16.2m).

I was way more excited for Brees vs Brady than Dak vs Goff. I bet you most fans probably felt this way too.

I wouldn’t read too much into either numbers, we don’t know shite yet.

I find this excuse they use very interesting. Since no fans are allowed and finally football is here, you would think covid would cause a record number watching.

The league, players, and sponsors will learn, the consumer wants to be entertained and not preached to and falsely told they are bad white people. Players are free to voice an opinion, but leave it for outside of sports. If you don’t like it, keep it up and destroy the sport that provides them millions.

Consumers are expressing themselves in return.

You should go look at Cowboy viewer numbers compared to most other teams. I think they typically have about 1/2 of the top 10 games or so of the most viewed regular season games. Every time I have looked at NFL ratings Dallas is always at the top. Saints surprisingly (market size) have done very well viewer wise the last few years as well.

I think Dallas had a few games in the 23M-25M range of viewers in the Sunday afternoon game in 2019 (including Dal vs Lar week 15 at 23M).

It will be more interesting to see if the ratings start to gradually rise once the novelty of the boycott wears off.

I wasn't much of a baseball fan at the time, but I remember a lot of talk about how the player strike killed fan enthusiasm and it didn't return until the McGuire-Sosa HR record chase.

There was a four year gap between those two events.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone didn't mention that fact to LeBron when he threw a tantrum and decided to call the season off.
