My 9 year old son went deer hunting for the first time this past winter. He used an AR-15 because we don't have a traditional bolt-action hunting rifle that was small enough and light enough for him to use safely and frankly didn't want try and find and spend the money on a junior bolt-action rifle for him to just use for a couple of years (if we could find one anyway). The AR-15 is lighter with a shorter stock and less recoil. He was able to be safe and comfortable with it.

People think it is some high powered "weapon of war" because of the way it looks when in reality it has a lot less "power" than most traditional bolt-action rifles.
