It won't be a tax on the remittances, it will be the threat to stop them altogether. Essentially, Trump wants to amend the Patriot Act, specifically the "know your customer" rule, to include money transfer institutions like Western Union. He'll then require aliens wiring money outside of the US to provide documents establishing their lawful presence in the US. That basically shuts off $24B worth of payments to Mexico annually, which he believes will force Mexico to comply with the demands to pay for the wall.

So essentially en E verify needed to be able to wire money? Won't Jose and friends just mail cash back home? Get cashiers checks or travelers checks and mail those home?

The only part of the plan that I question is the actual costs. Trump says it would be between $5-$10B, but that seems... low. In 1996 dollars, the government estimated that an average freeway mile costs $20MM, but we're going to build a wall, complete with border crossings and all, for $5MM/mile?

I agree. I've ridden in these remote areas. The roads you will need to build alone to get trucks and equipment to the site at the border in some places would be costly.

Liberals never think anything big can actually be achieved and/or condescendingly sneer at the idea anyway. One of my first political memories is of libs laughing at Reagan's idea of a missle defense system. They turned out to be wrong but they will never admit it.

If it can be done there..it can be done here.

The one thing that I think intrigues Trump into building a wall is his legacy. I think that is part of the reason he ran for president is so that his name would be remembered and marked in history. Let's face it the dude definitely doesn't need the 400 grand a year salary. I believe that he thinks that if he actually gets "The Trump Wall" built it would definitely be one of the monuments that he could stick next to his name in the history books. This is the reason I believe he wants it the most. Jmo

Those are already regulated by the Patriot Act.

I think the wall is ridiculous, but I kinda want to see it get built. It would be our generation's Hoover Dam.

Fun factoid: While typing this it got me thinking about the Great Wall of China, so I hopped over to Wikipedia to read up on it a bit. I've heard claims about it being visible from space, but I also heard it was false. I thought this was interesting:
quote:

The claim the Great Wall is visible from the moon has been debunked many times,[65] but is still ingrained in popular culture.[66] The wall is a maximum 9.1 m (29 ft 10 in) wide, and is about the same color as the soil surrounding it. Based on the optics of resolving power (distance versus the width of the iris: a few millimeters for the human eye, meters for large telescopes) only an object of reasonable contrast to its surroundings which is 110 km (70 mi) or more in diameter (1 arc-minute) would be visible to the unaided eye from the Moon, whose average distance from Earth is 384,393 km (238,851 mi). The apparent width of the Great Wall from the Moon is the same as that of a human hair viewed from 3 km (2 mi) away. To see the wall from the Moon would require spatial resolution 17,000 times better than normal (20/20) vision.

It won't ever get done, just like him deporting all illegals won't ever happen. In fact I wouldn't be shocked if he gives amnesty to a lot of them once he's in office.

It would cost between 400-600 billion dollars to "kick" them out, the gdp shrinks by 5+% and the economy collapses.

Wouldn't cost that much. America isnt above a trail of tears as my people know.

GDP surprises you, Americans take pride in work more than ever. grows by 10%. You're wrong and win anyways.

What good is it? They're gonna tunnel under it and its goingbto cost too much. The yearly upkeep alone will be expensive

Underground sensors & modern technology can put a stop to that with proper infrastructure. Yearly upkeep would cost 90% less than what it already costs taxpayers to deal with illegals.

Like help them eradicate some cartels or something.

Uhhhh I hope you realize that building a wall is going to "eradicate some cartels or something" so I guess all we have to do is build it and make them pay for it.

$115-$120 billion yearly on taxpayers to support illegals. If even half of them are gone, it's easily possible.

there may be a few improvements and extensions to the current wall, but there won't be wall anymore than Obama is going to close GITMO.

Ugh. Cheery pickin bastard. They also pay for good and services. Pay over 10 billion a year in social security and pay into local and federal taxes. They work in a variety of industries and send an estimated $50 billion a year overseas. Also, its estimated that it would cost almost 2 trillion to take them all out of the country.
