Recently saw some articles coming out with Newt Gingrich's comments and wondered if the wall was a pipe dream all along.

Is this the first "art of the deal" 6D chess lesson OR an item that has to be walked back?

Would increased security and electronic countermeasures create a "virtual wall" that would suffice?

LINK

quote:

Two days after Donald Trump was elected president, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an ardent Trump supporter, admitted the president-elect's promise to get Mexico to fund his proposed border wall may have just been "a campaign device." "He may not spend much time trying to get Mexico to pay for it," Gingrich said of a hypothetical border structure. "But it was a great campaign device."

ETA: I'm pro Trump but genuinely curious how this will play out.

You people don't get it. There WILL be a wall. A big, beautiful wall. And Mexico is going to pay for it

Wall should start at the Canadian border past the eastern stale lines of Washington, Oregon California then across Mexico. I would help

They will pay for it because we will save money by not housing them.

Money that will be used to then erect security.

I thought Mexico was going to pay for it indirectly via import new trade taxes

There will never be a wall.

This will go down into political folklore, and will come to be known as a 'Build the Wall' reference, when politicians say something extravagant just to get elected.

Not that I didn't vote for the guy, but we all knew the wall is never going up.

Why don't we tax on the federal level the remittances? Easy to do and Mexico will be paying. Last year they made more from what Mexicans sent back home than they did in oil revenues.

What if they pay $75 an hour for labor? Time and a half overtime?

Illegal immigration costs federal and local taxpayers $113 billion a year.

$75 an hour would be a low number.

They do need some jets.

Any chance some of our older fleets could be bargaining chips?

Here's what they get in exchange: An absence of a tax on remittances.

Then why is Newt walking it back?

The bigger estimates I've heard of the cost of the wall is in the tens-of-billions of dollars. Why do people think that is a large number? They act like it would bankrupt the nation to build it. Have they not seen our last federal budget?

It costs all taxpayers $113 billion a year dealing with illegal immigrants.

Kick them out,..let's say it takes 2 years. I believe it can be done with the $226 billion saved.

I think you'd be surprised how many people actually believe it. Glad you kept your wits about you, though.

It won't be a tax on the remittances, it will be the threat to stop them altogether. Essentially, Trump wants to amend the Patriot Act, specifically the "know your customer" rule, to include money transfer institutions like Western Union. He'll then require aliens wiring money outside of the US to provide documents establishing their lawful presence in the US. That basically shuts off $24B worth of payments to Mexico annually, which he believes will force Mexico to comply with the demands to pay for the wall.

The only part of the plan that I question is the actual costs. Trump says it would be between $5-$10B, but that seems... low. In 1996 dollars, the government estimated that an average freeway mile costs $20MM, but we're going to build a wall, complete with border crossings and all, for $5MM/mile?

I never believed it, but I'm starting to think it is going to happen. It is the #1 bullet point on his transition website that went up today. I think he can get by politically without doing it because most people never thought it would happen, but I'm beginning to think he's still going to do it.

Mexico is paying for the wall; whether they can afford it or not is irrelevant.
