How long had mother and sister been in this country and were they actively seeking citizenship, or were they playing the long game of "they won't do anything about it, since one of our family members is in the military"? Did the military man express his concern to his family and urge them to properly document themselves?

I will have pity for them when you answer the questions about their legality of being here in this country. A family member serving in the Armed Forces does not constitute citizen ship the last time I checked.
