If it was such a part of ukraine, why is ukraine shelling its own citizens and killing them?
Crimea has always been part of the Motherland, geographically it was a dingleberry hanging off the arse of ukraine so they annexed it when they got their independence so they could have a larger presence to the seas.
They speak Russian, they think of themselves as Russian, and yes they voted to be part of Russia. Russia sent troops to take back part of the Motherland and defend their citizens against ukranians who, to this day, are still killing them and some idiots think this is a good thing.

Yep. Along with Kelly and a host of back stabbing and profiteering Neocon politicos who profit big time off their Muh Democracy crusades. Rotten to the core, and is virtually irreparable minus a massive struggle. The DC Cabal has too much blood and treasure invested to go away without a suicidal fight; one which they believe they can survive, when the dust settles and the bodies are buried, as being in the Globalist fold.
