He either dropped the $500k they cost to just buy one outright, or paid to rent one for a bit from somewhere. I used to be in the truck parts, sales, and repair industry and I have a hard time believing he found one available to "rent" as that typically isn't possible or available with a garbage truck.

Your average 18 wheeler and box truck is pretty easily rented with a CDL and some money, but there aren't really any dealers out there renting out garbage trucks or other specialized trucks and equipment like that.

Long story short, he totally dropped a half-mil on buying a new garbage truck

There are companies that have these on hand, ready to buy for companies, cities, etc. They probably lent it to him free of charge, or got paid a nominal rental fee.
