re: Trump considering Bobby Valentine for Ambassador to Japan

He was a PR nightmare in NYC and Boston.
Japanese apparently love him. No PR problem here. In fact, all evidence points to the opposite. In a country where respecting culture is so important, Valentine would be ahead of the curve.

Some people even wanted him to be the athletic director even though there is nothing about him that says he would be good at it.
Valentine is an AD.
Also the fact that he may be a liberal isn't that big of a deal here. He's Trump's mouthpiece. Sure, he can influence policy, but he still represents the President.

mbassadors are often vanity positions with no real substantive role. Ambassador to japan is probably bigger than most, but I don't think it matters much TBH. Assuming you can follow cultural protocol, it probably doesn't matter who much you pick.
congratulation, you were the first person that came in the thread and tried to rationalize another in series now of Trump's absolutely horrible cabinet picks.

When he brings in outsider people whine, when he brings in politicians people whine

We can afford a vanity pick for Ambassador to Luxemberg. Japan is one of the more important diplomatic posts, particularly with an unstable North Korea and a territorial aggressive China nearby. You don't necessarily need a career Foreign Service officer, but you do need somebody with more depth than an ex baseball manager.

I'm pretty sure that democrats could give Trump a list of people to choose from, Trump picks one from that list, and democrats would bitch about the one he chose

Congratulations you are a Clinton voter. You still bash Trumps picks. You are a democrat from Arkansas and voted for Clinton. I can rationalize that guess what your a dumbass

Do you have any evidence of exactly what kind of depth he does have? Or is this just a bunch of stereotypical bullshite?

In 10 seconds name the current Japanese ambassador and 3 bullet points of his foreign policy credentials before taking the position. Go.

Oh, shite. It really is Caroline Kennedy.

statement 1 is correct whether its author knows the matters you request or doesnt.
its not our job to know who is ambassador to Jaoan. its within reason to expect someone who has the chops for world crisis. Bobby is not the man for the job, and even suggesting him is asinine to the max. "I will hire the best people".
dunce.

But do you really think Caroline Kennedy possessed any great foreign services acumen, or particular skill set that would benefit relations with the Japanese before taking the position?
I don't even mean that as a deflection/'they did it too' point. I think she's probably as good for the job as anyone else Obama might could have nominated. I similarly am not sure that someone who has spent several years working in a relatively high profile position in Japan with dealings interacting with the Japanese public is necessarily a 'dunce' pick just because it's sports related.
The knee jerk reaction to call it so seems much more dunceish to me.

Who I didn't think was a great choice either. "Obama did it too" is not a real great defense of Trump's curious choices for these positions.

Yeah, I know.
Having somebody over there that actually knows the culture is way too much common sense for the likes of you to fathom.

TOKYO — "Bobbeeee!" They recognize him wherever he goes. Even out of uniform -- no ball cap, no big No. 2 on his back -- everyone in Tokyo seems to know who Bobby Valentine is.
"Bobbeeee!" They shout and try to shake his hand (he hates that) or take his picture with their cellphone cameras.
Having Bobby Valentine on your cellphone is a very cool thing in Japan right now.
Always popular, Valentine has become an even bigger star in the week since his Chiba Lotte Marines, the team from the Tokyo 'burbs and the standing joke of Japanese baseball, defied the usual skeptics and socked their way to the club's first championship in 31 years.
"Bobby Magic," the media here call it. "Bobby's Family" read the newspaper headline under the team's victory photo after they swept the Hanshin Tigers from Osaka in four games to win the Japan Series.
Tokyo is Bobby's Town.
I watched a documentary on his success in Japan. He actually hated the term "Bobby Magic!" because his friends said it implied that it had to be magic and not skill because no Japanese manager was able to win with the Marines and a foreign manager couldn't possibly be better than a Japanese manager.
The management of the Marines were shown liking his success but were a little off put how quickly he had it.

But for this one, I think it is. What has Caroline Kennedy detrimentally done (or not done)?
